Philips Soundbar HTS8140

Its been a while since we reviewed a Philips product. Of course, that doesn't mean we've forgotten the company, considering its reputation as a brand. Indeed, I have here with me a cool-looking innovative home theater system. This single ‘Soundbar'...

At Rs 56,000 the Soundbar HTS8140 is not exactly meant for the budget-conscious, but then it's a high-end unit in terms of design. Movies and games are its specialty. It has a number of inputs for sound, and the overall frequency response is perfect...

Philips HTS8140 review

Philips' space-saving solution is almost the real thing

Clear picture ; Very practical form factor ; Genuine surround FX

Slightly disjointed bass channel ; Sounds compressed in surround modes

Don't want to get into a tangle with a full 5.1 surround setup? This stylish Philips one-bar system could be just the ticket…

Not a true replacement for a 5.1 system, but a fine performer that offers spectacular, hassle-free home cinema

Philips HTS8140 Ambisound Home Cinema System

If you don't have the room or the need for a full 5.1-channel surround sound system, Philips has just the thing...

As a die-hard home cinema fan, I always approach systems like the Philips HTS8140 with a healthy dose of scepticism, knowing full well that they won’t really be able to deliver the ‘proper’ surround sound performance I crave. But I have to say that...

Philips SoundBar HTS8140

If you're looking for a discrete budget system as equally at home with music as it is with movies then they don't come much better than the Philips SoundBar HTS8140.

Great with music ; Excellent DVD playback ; iPod dock ; 1080p upscaling ; Slick styling

No video switching ; No wireless ; Bass needs adjusting for music

The retail price has recently dropped from AU$1,199 to AU$999, and we've seen it in catalogues for AU$899 — at that price it's a bargain. No-one is ever going to confuse this with a 5.1 system, but if you need a quick and easy set-up that looks good...

Philips HTS8140

The main soundbar unit measures 40in wide, 7in high and 5in deep, and is adorned with a slick, touch-sensitive control panel that slides to one side to reveal the DVD player. The subwoofer unit isn't quite so elegant - at almost 18in high and 12in wide...

Good audio quality, along with upscaling DVD player and iPod connectivity

Virtual surround sound isn't very effective

Great unit. Brought tv (42pfl9703D) and soundbar from Harvey Norman for $2600 all up including the stand. The soundbar cost me $600

Good unit and plenty of base

Synching could be improved

Philips SoundBar HTS8140

love this system picked it up yesterday from GG for $870 and they threw in a stand for $50 which i am in the process of putting together.

awesome sound, good bass and not tinny at all. the sound bar is so very pretty with the philips tv ; hooked it up with the playstation for singstar and it sounds awesome ; love the ipod dock

Absolute crap screws in the base unable to remove to mount system to the stand. Stripped the thread in a few trys. Made me soooo angry and still havn't got it off. You would think they would make it with decent screws... not sure wat to do now
