VMware Workstation 6.0

VMware defined the virtualization market eight years ago, and VMware products have been helping software developers, help desks, product testers, and ordinary users ever since. With VMware Workstation 6.0, the company has further refined and enhanced...

Lets you run many different operating systems in virtual machines, save and restore multiple snapshots, and clone virtual or physical machines. Offers many new and enhanced features. Fully compatible with Vista, including 64-bit versions

Virtual machines don't support the 3D graphics needed for Vista's Aero Glass. Some experimental features didn't work in testing

Version 6 of VMware Workstation has full Vista support and a ton of new features and enhancements. It integrates with development environments for remote debugging, supports USB 2.0 and multiple monitors, and even has an experimental feature to record...

Virtualization showdown: VMware Workstation vs. Sun xVM VirtualBox

A two-horse race: That's how the market for general purpose desktop virtualization packages is shaping up, at least for the foreseeable future. With Microsoft all but abandoning Virtual PC (no updates in more than a year), and with everyone else...

Direct3D acceleration is another great feature. When enabled, it allows applications in the guest OS to render Direct3D objects with nearly native performance, allowing even demanding programs like DirectX-based games to run within a VM. I've...

The daily workhorse

My entire system is designed from scratch to run this one application. newegg has gotten a lot of business from me in the process. IPv6 is fully supported by virtual networking, they don't make this clear. Download and run the the tester program from...

It works, very very well ; It directly supports every OS that I need to run on the Intel/AMD architecture ; I can run 12 VMs at once on my 8-core machine with bushels of RAM ; The virtual networking is excellent, you can simulate a cluster of systems...

The UI for the Virtual Network Editor is clunky and buggy ; There are a lot of hidden settings that are not documented very well ; Don't expect better than 'good' performance. You will still need real machines for "real" testing under "real" loads ;...

If you want to try out Vmware, go to their website, and download Vmware Server. Its free to do, its easy to use, and it'll give you a feel for what Vmware Workstation will be like (workstation is certainly better, but server does ok too).

Fast, not expensive when you consider your savings. Good user interface, easy to understand

Not free. A little more expensive than i want to pay, but well worth it. Not direct rendering for graphics. Sound can be a little sketchy, but really its meant for a work environment

VMware Mature

I had this prod. since v.3,4 when machines pen3 and limit 650. It always a reliable, OS crash restore OS, then all apps installed under VMW be there back in business within 1hr, that include reinstalled Win2K. Install Linux, so easy as 1,2,3. If you...

It limit the cpu max. 2, that meant 2 cores. Event you have P4 CPU 4 cores, or 2 Xeon, 8 cores just only use 2 cores. Oh well, I know why they do that for people hunger cpu cores like me to upgrade ESX cost $1,000

Good stuff--been using it for years

Be sure to enable the "Vanderpool Technology" on your mobo, or else VMWare won't be able to create 64 bit virtual images. If you want to try out some new software, but don't want to mess up your main system, then VMWare is perfect. Make your VM image,...

When it comes to testing or experimenting with software, or just to have another system installed, nothing works better. I have four different OS images currently on disk that I can run anytime--(or the same time, but it's harder on memory) Been using...

Maybe a bit of a learning curve for a few folks, but well worth it

I have been wanting to try this for some time

I plan to use Vista again as the host (but using the 64 bit version as an initial test) because driver support for MS OSs is relatively better than others and VMWare seems to be able to use the host drivers without problems.

Flawless installation into my Vaio VGN-FZ180E/B using Vista Ultimate as the host. Through VMWare I was able to install both XP Pro and a couple of Linux distros and all three OSs behaved respectfully

I am having to start from scratch now because I just upgraded my hard drive

Instructors can create a library of pre-configured training environments and easily distribute them to students. Sales and marketing staff can run demos for different OS versions of their product on the same machine. With undoable disks, you can try "what if" scenarios without the worry of trashing the test system or having to rebuild it - a virtual machine can be restored with a click of the mouse.
