Review: Gear4 DUO Versatile Speaker System for iPod

Originality has long since disappeared from the iPod speaker category: there are dozens of any given type of pocket, portable, or desktop design, each with relatively small distinctions that might appeal to certain users. So we are conceptually very...

A unique combination of a truly portable iPod speaker system with a docking station that doubles as a subwoofer, improving the portable unit's bass response when they're connected for tabletop audio and charging. Includes a replaceable rechargeable...

Docking the portable speaker with the subwoofer and charging dock was problematic in our review unit due to an issue currently being resolved by the manufacturer. While exceptionally convenient for users who would otherwise buy both portable and...

While this docking issue wasn't fatal to our rating of DUO, it did take away somewhat from what was otherwise a very positive experience. There's no question that Gear4 has created a new iPod speaker category that offers users a novel combination of...

Gear4 Duo iPod Speaker Dock

If you believe the adage two's a company, alas the Gear4 Duo proves that isn't necessarily the case.

that is.

Gear4 Duo review

Gear4's Duo adds a new twist to the tired and overcrowded market for iPod speaker docks. The front speaker unit is battery powered and removable and can be used independently from the main unit.

Gear4 Duo review

The Gear4 Duo is so-called because of its dual functions: it's a standard, mains-powered MP3 player dock that can also be used portably. To do this, you must wrest off the fascia on the front of the dock. You're then left with a lightweight speaker...

Overall, however, we found the Gear4 Duo a successful marriage of home and portable speaker dock. We’ve already put in our plea for an FM radio on the next model though.

Stuff magazine

The Duo is a home and travel iPod dock in one. Is it twice as nice or double trouble?

A genuinely innovative approach to the iPod dock, but let down by its price and sonic performance

Gear4 Duo review

While not the best-sounding system we've ever heard, its sheer usefulness as a home audio product is terrific, and we don't dislike the look of it, either

Convenience ; Design ; Simple operation ; Sheer usefulness in the home

Sound quality could be better ; No video-out

If you want to sacrifice convenience for better audio quality, check out the Klipsch iGroove SXT or the terrific Tannoy i30 -- the SXT is far less harsh in the high-end, but the i30 will give you raw power you never thought an iPod was capable of. Or,...

Credit for thinking out of the box but the basics ? price and performance ? seem to have been neglected

Twin docks is a clever idea; rechargeable battery; plenty of bass as one unit

Lacks clarity and edgy; portable unit sounds thin

Speaker of Headphones : Angry Birds Speaker Pig with iPod Dock from Gear4 & Plantronics Gamecom (780)

First a set of 2.1 speakers shaped like a helmeted head –single unit – and no doubt will be sold on the Angry Birds name. Second a set of high specification 7.1 headphones designed predominately for those who are into gaming.

When does a toy or game become a serious product? Here we have a rather nice iPod dock with speaker but I suspect the initial sales potential will be round the ‘Angry Birds’ name and with pester power being what it is… It is 13cm wide and 16cm deep...
