Pioneer XW-NAS5 iPod Audio System - Brutish & Powerful

The stylish Pioneer XW-NAS5 iPod audio system has just arrived in our labs and we gave it a listen to find out how it fares. It's one of the few devices we know that can mimic various external environments along with your favorite tunes.

Pioneer XW-NAS5 iPod dock review

iPod/iPhone systems are proving to be one of the fastest-selling products in consumer electronics, but most are little more than docks attached to a rudimentary speaker. Not so Pioneer's multi-coloured XW-NAS5, which - as its rather ambitious price...

Excellent sound quality, plenty of bass, superb size and design

iPhones must be disabled, high price, basic remote

Perfect for a permanent place on a living room bookshelf or as a portable device for parties, we’ve no complaint about sound quality or style, though one or two rough edges and the rudimentary remote control do take it down a notch or two

Review: Pioneer XW-NAS5

Pioneer's XW-NAS5 will satisfy those with a thirst for bass in a speaker dock and make your room sound like a crowded beach.

Plenty of power; FM radio; component-video output; solid build quality; many audio-tweaking options

High-priced; may sound too bassy; remote control is hard to use; iPhone-compatible only in airplane mode

It delivers good audio quality and good serving of bass, but only if you like the way it sounds.

Pioneer XW-NAS5

The market for iPod hifis is one that Apple didn't quite get right, but since it bowed out of highend audio speaker market, plenty of products have arrived to fill the gap. Pioneer has decided to have a crack at the higher end of the market with its...

At 400, the XWNAS5 is just a touch too expensive to get our full endorsement, but it's a capable iPod hifi and listening wirelessly is good, especially from an iPod touch or iPhone. If you're a discerning listener, however, it might be best to have a...

Pioneer XW-NAS5 iPod dock

Pioneer's XW-NAS5 is a seriously expensive dock. It has a 10cm subwoofer, "ultra-rigid" construction and an "advanced sound retriever" which Pioneer claims "upscales" compressed MP3 audio to improve the sound.

Massive bass

Thin, sibilant sound

Pioneer XW-NAS5 review

The Pioneer XW-NAS5 is one of the most expensive iPod speaker docks we've laid eyes and ears on, but in return for that hefty wedge of cash we're promised top notch sound quality and design. So does it deliver? Read our full Pioneer XW-NAS5 review to...

Glorious looks. Optional wireless capabilties

The price is frightening

Stylish, solid and sonically adept – but the high price is a bit of a turn-off
