Review Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M5-581TG Ultrabook

Ultra(Gaming)Book. Acer equips their Ultrabook with a 20.6 millimeter (0.81 inch) thick aluminum chassis and a Kepler GT640M GPU suitable for gaming. Does this combination work and do the temperatures remain within acceptable limits? Read our review to...

Keyboard with backlight ; Optical drive ; GPU performance of the GeForce GT 640M ; Price-performance ratio ; Long battery life under load ; Ports on the back

Average port selection (no VGA connector) ; Viewing angles quite restricted ; Constant fan noise

The thermal differences between this model and the Timeline Ultra M3-581TG

Acer Aspire TimelineU M5-581TG-6666

Acer's 15.6-inch Timeline U M5 Ultrabook offers discrete graphics and long battery life in a lightweight design.

Click to EnlargeWith most 15.6-inch notebooks, you're forced to lug around a bulky, heavy device, sacrificing thickness for power. The $829 Acer Aspire TimelineU M5-581TG-6666 is a happy compromise, stuffing a slim 0.81-inch chassis with an Ivy Bridge...

Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M5-581TG-6666

The Acer Timeline Ultra M5 is yet another Ultrabook on the scene. This one offers an attractive design, great audio, an optical drive and discrete graphics. It does lack in screen resolution and overall performance, which holds this computer back from...

beautiful and slim

Once you get used to the screen you're fine. The touch pad however is a bit too annoying so I'm using a usb mouse.

This is a decently powered laptop, but it is very very thin and high quality looking. The screen I'm not too fond of, but that's always been the case with acer screens. Overall a solid machine, and love the fact that it has a number pad

First one that arrived was bad - touch pad would stop working at a certain angle, and the wifi seemed to operate without an antenna connected because the range was lousy ; The second one's wifi worked great, and the touch pad issue was not there....

Best thing I ever bought

I purposely waited to review this for a period of a few weeks to make sure it didn't start to crash or anything and so far she's a beast. Also it's a 640M (Keplar based) NOT the LE. Laptop sits flat on the table for me. (Someone else said theirs...

I love this Ultrabook. I was deciding if I even needed it to be honest, but now that I have it's amazing. Really fast, and play any game I throw at it. For the price (I paid 680) you really can't beat it. I would buy this thing again in a heartbeat. I...

No cons so far. Only the "sleep issue" where you have to touch the button sometimes to wake it up. The power button on the front isn't best of choices either but these are small things to live with

Liking it a lot so far.

Hearing the problems with win 8 bothers me but i need 7 still for school so I'm hoping Acer will update their drivers before i make the change. Probably throw in a crucial 256gb msata and a matching 8gb stick of RAM to speed this thing up even more....

Thin, relatively light, great battery life, and runs diablo 3, black ops 2, borderlands 2, and CS:GO all perfectly fine with latest nvidia drivers. Unlike some people I love the keyboard. I can type fast and haven't noticed any missed keys. The...

The mechanical drives they put in these must be garbage! My hdd died after about 40 days, sent to Acer (which I'll never do via ups again$$) got it back 2 weeks later but its been running perfectly since(another 40ish days). The USB ports in the back...

Ultrabook with power of a gaming LAPTOP

For this price I got this time around 649$ it has amazing performance. the processor is a little lacking for maybe someone who uses digital media programs often but for my school work and lots of gaming (dota2, CS:GO, and even BF3 on med)

Switchable Graphics between Intel HD 4000 and 640m ; Sleek and stylish ; Portable, light, slim aka an ultrabook

nvidia optimus that is supposed to "switch seamlessly" between graphic to save on power and only use the 640m when need doesn't work at all. Simple and easy way to add games to be played on 640 is to list their .exe file in the exceptions in Nvidia...

Friggin awesome

Coming from a MCITP, A+, CIW, and Cisco technician... This is a VERY good PC, good build quality and very future-proof. Looking forward to many years of use. Take previous negative reviews with a grain of salt. I would upload a video review but I...

Can play most games at high to ultra settings ; Optical Drive ; Build Quality ; Sleek ; Decent" Processor (though still better than ANY mobile AMD processor) *AMD fanboy ; PRICE

PORTS ON BACK ; Heat while gaming is worrying ; Bloatware, went ahead and formatted to Windows 8, installed Windows 7 Pro, and set to dual boot using Windows 7 boot manager and that probably took as long as I would have spent uninstalling all of the...

Awesome Laptop!

Mine also came with a full 640M and not the LE version

Would get a full 5 eggs but it does run warm like others state if your doing some long gaming sessions. Wish you could enable Raid to take advantage of Intel Smart Response Technology for SSD caching cause the SSD is only used for fast sleep and wake...
