Acer TravelMate 2480 series

While not our favorite low-cost laptop, these similar configurations of the Acer TravelMate 2480 offer performance in line with other budget systems (read: acceptable for basic use).

Acer TravelMate 2480-2153 (Celeron M 1.73GHz review: Acer TravelMate 2480-2153 (Celeron M 1.73GHz

Acer TravelMate 2480-2153 (Celeron M 1.73GHz

Inexpensive; sturdy construction; strikes good balance between screen size and overall weight; decent performance for basic use; ergonomically curved keyboard is comfortable to use.

Nonconfigurable; no FireWire ports; poor battery life.

It looks more expensive than it is, and its performance is in line with other budget systems (read: acceptable for basic use), but weak battery life keeps the Acer TravelMate 2480-2153 from replacing a Gateway model as our favorite low-cost laptop.

Acer TravelMate 2483WXMi

The TravelMate is clearly not the laptop for a power user -- nevertheless, at a budget price of $999 it has a very good feature set, including a DVD burner.

Dual layer DVD burner ; Shock-protected hard drive ; Good ergonomics

Only 512MB of RAM ; Slowest PC at this price ; Tinny speakers

Very Nice

VERY light weight.

Vista is a memory hog, and this laptop only comes with 512MB - Add a stick of 512 or larger to maximize performance.

good for the price

Add half a gig of memory and a wireless laptop mouse all for under forty bucks and you're good to go. Unfamiliar with Acer's service after the sale so do your own homework.

Under six hundred bucks to get all you need to surf, email, and run office apps. The curved keyboard is nice. Getting XP Pro sealed the deal for me

No dvd burner, no 15.4" glossy screen and a tiny amount of ram. However at this price point it's still a good buy

XP Pro makes it worth it!

I have purchased a second Acer laptop because of my satisfaction with this model. The price with XP Pro makes it well worth it to me. If you can afford it, spend the extra $50 with newegg for a 2gb memory upgrade. The memory needs to be paired sticks...

Price is very reasonable. Laptop performs well and has decent specs for price. Not too large or small. Has SD slot reader, integrated W-Lan works well

I'm only mentioning these as cons but they should not be a turn off for decision making. Speakers are low end as with most laptop speakers. Acer backup software is on a partitioned drive which is using alot of the 80gig hard disk. Only 512mb ram installed

Great low-budget laptop

This is a great laptop for a student or business person who might be considering "gosh, how about this $1000+ Dell/Gateway/whatever." It's just as good for any business/school applications as any other sort of computer, and has all the...

There's really alot to like about this laptop. The screen is a nice Acer LCD, no dead pixels, widescreen. Decent sized hard drive (not good for the movie/music collector, but good for almost anyone else). Fast enough to do anything well - assuming the...

Battery life leaves something to be desired, but that's a universal problem with most laptops. Comes with Vista - I didn't even bother trying and put XP on it instead. That's not Acer's fault though. Poor speakers too, but that's a universal laptop...

Good for price

go to http://www.acer.com.my/service/tech_bulletin_details.aspx?dev=&c2=service_left&tid=TAB-170507-1 for the xp wireless drivers (the official ones are broken)

Probably the best value acer is offering right now ; Improved (functionally) design over old travelmate

Comes with vista. XP version costs more money. A little bigger than my old travelmate, not as sleek in the screen area
