13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display Review

As soon as Apple rolled out the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display last summer, all the Mac addicts we know began clamoring for more Retina models, and this past fall Apple obliged, introducing a 13-inch version. From the outside, it looks just...

Amazing display. Thin and light, only about half a pound heavier than MacBook Air. Flash memory is super fast. $500 cheaper than 15-inch version. Many more apps are Retina-enhanced than when the 15-inch model first came out

Can’t upgrade RAM at all. Can’t upgrade storage after initial purchase. No quad-core option or discrete graphics card. Apps not updated for Retina display are unbearably blurry

You can shave nearly a pound of weight and save $500 by choosing this over the 15-inch Retina MBP. The only reasons not to are if you edit huge video files frequently, or you want to wait to see what Apple’s got coming next — say, quad-core chips,...

Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display (13-inch)

The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display outclasses Ultrabooks with a much sharper screen, faster performance and longer battery life.

Superb Retina display; Excellent overall performance; High-quality speakers; Comfortable keyboard and touchpad; Long battery life

Pricier than most ultraportables; Integrated graphics

Click to EnlargeThe 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display is a lot like the iPhone 5. Apple took a winning formula and perfected it by making it thinner, lighter and faster. But in this case the display isn't bigger. It's a quantum leap better than...

Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display (13-inch) review: A rebooted MacBook Pro for the ultrabook era

By adding a high-res Retina Display to a new 13-inch MacBook Pro, Apple has taken the odd man out of its MacBook line -- the previous 13-inch Pro -- and turned it into a sleek, modern laptop sitting at the midway point between slim ultrabook and...

The new 13-inch Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display adds a screen that's nearly as high-res as the 15-inch version, making for incredibly crisp text and images. The slimmer body feels much more modern, and the excellent keyboard and trackpad remain.

Considering that this looks and feels a lot like the 13-inch MacBook Air, you may be in for a bit of sticker shock, especially as the base model only includes 128GB of SSD storage.

While the Retina MacBook Pro is easily the most desirable 13-inch Mac laptop to date, the high price and lack of discrete graphics make it a tough call versus either the more powerful 15-inch Retina Pro or the more affordable 13-inch Air.

13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display review (2013)

Standing in a Best Buy is an odd time for an existential crisis. Yet it's an almost certain occurrence, at least when you're there shopping for a laptop. More so than with any other product category, buying a laptop forces you to make all manner of...

Gorgeous screen ; Excellent battery life ; Thinner and lighter than ever

Relatively small usable screen real estate ; Poor speakers ; Definite graphics restraints

Not quite a perfect mix, but an excellent middle ground

MacBook Pro 13-inch with Retina display review

Apple's incredible Retina screen comes to its smaller MacBook Pro

Incredible screen ; Ivy Bridge processors ; Fast solid state storage ; Gestures trackpad ; Great battery life

Very expensive ; No FireWire 800 or Ethernet ports ; No optical drive ; Very difficult to repair or upgrade ; 15-inch model might be better value

13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display

Apple's Retina notebook display comes to its 13-inch MacBook Pro, as does a processor update and the introduction of flash-only storage. The portable Mac powerhouse does get harder to tinker with after you've bought it, though.

Apple MacBook Pro 13in with Retina display review

It was inevitable that the original Retina-class notebook, the 15in MacBook Pro, would be joined by a similarly bescreened 13in model.

The essential specifications of the 13in Apple MacBook Pro with Retina display closely follow the groundbreaking original 15in version. Reduced size here necessitates integrated-only graphics, as well as a more efficient dual-core rather than quad-core...

Apple MacBook Pro with Retina display (2012, 13.3-inch)

Great screen ; Apple's usual excellent keyboard and trackpad ; Dual thunderbolt and USB 3.0 gives decent port flexibility ; Good battery life ; HDMI

The base near the monitor gets quite hot during heavy tasks ; Still waiting for everything to be high DPI compatible ; Weight will make some consider the Air instead

There's absolutely no doubt that the MacBook Pro Retina 13 has a beautiful display. Some will be phased by the weight and go for the MacBook Air, others will deem it to be worth it. We just wish it came with discrete graphics.
