Review Apple MacBook Air 13 Mid 2012 Subnotebook

Ivy Air. Sounds like an airline, but it is the newest generation of Apple's successful subnotebooks. We tested the entry-level model featuring a 13.3 inch screen and Intel's Core i5. Its exterior is - as always - (virtually) nothing new. ...

High manufacturing quality ; Low weight ; Compact size ; Fast SSD ; Good overall performance ; Usually very quiet

Moderate screen resolution ; Reflective screen ; Average brightness ; Barely any maintenance or upgrade possibilities ; Weaknesses in thermal design

The MacBook Air's battery runtime is excellent and beats most ultrabooks by lengths. Their field of application is supposed to be mobility

Review Apple MacBook Air 13 Mid 2011 (1.7 GHz, 256 GB SSD) Subnotebook

Turbo Air. After the refresh of the Air's case in autumn of last year, we now see completely new internal hardware based on Intel's Sandy Bridge technology. The extremely thin aluminium chassis remains unchanged, still setting the bar for...

Low weight and small size; Outstanding aluminium case; Very good input devices; Backlit keyboard; Very good application performance for a subnotebook

Relatively expensive; Not so many ports; Reflective display; Non-upgradeable system memory

Apple has managed to deliver the epitome of a ‘notebook’ or ‘laptop' in this model of the Air

Apple MacBook Air (13-inch, Summer 2012)

Not too long ago, the MacBook Air practically stood alone in the computer landscape with its unique blend of design, size, and performance, an improvement on the thin laptop with low-voltage CPU. The MacBook Air, in turn, influenced the arrival of the...

The 13-inch MacBook Air has new Intel CPUs, better battery life, and an improved 720p Webcam, and finally adds USB 3.0 ports, while shaving $100 off the price from last year's models.

The design, while strong, stays largely the same: there's no Ethernet port, and the base SSD storage option of 128GB is smaller than a standard hard drive, though common for ultrabooks.

This year's MacBook Air opts for gradual improvements rather than anything revolutionary, but lowered prices continue to make it the go-to mainstream recommendation for any MacBook owner-to-be.

Still thinner and lighter than many competitors ; Improved battery life ; Blistering speed ; Comfortable keyboard and trackpad

Aluminum casing is still scratch-prone ; Competitors offer higher-res displays

The Air remains our favorite ultraportable, thanks to improved battery life, exceptional speed and a comfortable design.

Apple MacBook Air (13-inch, 2012)

Apple makes the quintessential ultraportable notebook even better by giving the MacBook Air faster performance and longer battery life.

Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Mid 2012)

The new Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Mid 2012) is a simple upgrade of the class-leading line, with a $100 price drop. Although a new processor gives you a little extra performance and some tests, the real additions are things like the new (for Mac) USB...

Thunderbolt port. Quick wake from sleep. Good screen resolution for a 13-inch laptop. USB 3.0. 256GB and 512GB flash storage upgrade option

No HDMI. New Ivy Bridge processor doesn't add much performance. New AC adapter incompatible with previous accessories without an adapter

Apple MacBook Air 13.3-inch (Mid-2011)

Geeks the world over swooned when Apple released the re-designed MacBook Air in the latter half of 2010. Now forged from solid aluminum and offering high-resolution displays (as well as a brand new 11.6-inch model), the update transformed the company's...

Excellent backlit keyboard ; Glass touchpad is still great ; Beautiful high-resolution display ; Surprisingly enjoyable audio ; Second-gen Core i5 packs a punch ; Absurdly thin and light

Average battery life ; Port selection remains limited ; Can become too warm for lap use ; Gaming performance takes a step back

The Air nails down the fundamentals. The keyboard is superb (and now backlit), the touchpad is excellent as always, the display offers a wealth of pixels, and performance is on par with much larger laptops.

Apple MacBook Air 13-inch

The SD slot, extra USB, and a staggering increase in battery life make the Apple MacBook Air 13-inch a strong contender in the ultraportable space.

An SD slot and extra USB port fill an important void. Stunningly beautiful design. Bigger battery resulted in almost twice as much battery life as its predecessor. Higher resolution increases the value of the 13-inch screen. Best clickpad...

Pricey. Starting memory configuration only 2GB rather than 4GB. Intel Core 2 Duo processor based on two-year-old technology

Apple MacBook Air 13 (Ivy Bridge) vs Ultrabooks

MacBook Air line. It's been four long years since Apple first introduced the MacBook Airto the world, which at the time was almost considered a luxury item, with a comparatively steep price tag versus other ultralight machines. That changed a couple of...

Hello Ivy Bridge ; Gorgeous design ; Extremely thin, light, and sturdy ; Excellent off-angle viewing, especially for a TN panel ; Fast SSD ; Boot Camp allows you to boot Windows on a separate partition ; Long battery life

Missing an IO port or two ; Where's the Retina Display resolution

It seems as though everything Intel's Ivy Bridge architecture touches turns to gold, and Apple's refreshed 13-inch MacBook Air is no exception. Running Mac OS X 10.8.2 (latest version of Mountain Lion at the time of this writing), the MacBook Air...
