Asus G74SX-A2 - Core i7-2630QM 2GHz - 17.3-inch TFT review: Asus G74SX-A2 - Core i7-2630QM 2GHz - 17.3-inch TFT

Asus G74SX-A2 - Core i7-2630QM 2GHz - 17.3-inch TFT

The ; packs gamer-friendly components into an understated case, and includes a large 160GB SSD and plenty of RAM.

It's very expensive, while some parts still feel cheap, and higher-end boutique laptops beat it on performance.

Asus has built a very nice sideline over the years with its gaming laptops, including the G74SX, which is a strong, if expensive, quad-core rig that works fine, but looks like it should cost less.

Asus G74SX-A2

The Asus G74SX-A2 holds its own against top gaming laptops with its quad-core processor and Nvidia graphics, and its stealthy cooling system kicks in when those components get hot.

Quad-core Intel Core i7 CPU and Nvidia GTX 560M GPU makes for a powerful component combination. Wide-set, backlit keyboard is one of the best available to gamers. Asus' cooling system keeps temperatures low without being noisy. 1080p display and...

Mild speaker hiss. Slightly outgunned by other quad and hex-core systems.

Asus G74SX-BBK8

The G74SX-BBK8 has an angular look, with polygonal shapes and sharp angles inspired by the Navy's stealth ship, the Stealth Shadow. Like previous Asus Republic of Gaming models, the G74SX-BBK8 is covered with matte-black rubberized paint, which...

Quad-core Intel Core i7 processor and Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M GPU. Design combines imposing looks with ergonomic comfort. 1TB dual-drive offers lots of storage space. Wide-spaced, backlit keyboard. Asus' cooling system is whisper-quiet

No Blu-ray. No 1080p resolution. Some games choke on highest settings

The Asus G74SX-BBK8 has the menacing look of a gaming machine, and backs it up with competitive performance numbers. On top of all this, its price won't break the bank, making it a solid choice for new gamers.

Asus G74SX-BBK7

The G74SX-BBK7 comes with not one, but two 500GB (7,200rpm) hard drives. One acts as the primary drive (C:) were your operating system is stored on and the other acts as a secondary (D:) drive to store any miscellaneous multimedia files or software.

Excelled in gaming with its Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M graphics chip. Powerful Core i7 processor. Backlit keyboard. Great typing and mouse experience. WiMAX. USB 3.0. Huge 1TB of hard drive space

No Blu-ray. No 1080p HD resolution. Battery life leaves something to be desired. Speakers are buzzy

The Asus G74SX-BBK7's huge exterior speaks volumes: Intimidating to the casual consumer, but speaks to the gamer saying, "The bigger I am, the better I game."

Review Asus G74SX-3DE Gaming Notebook

New strengths. The new Asus G74 was already seen at the Cebit this year in Hanover, even if as a mock-up. It also hardened initial suspicions regarding the use of the new Nvidia GTX 560M graphics solution. Now the time has finally arrived and the...

High-end case impression; Pleasant and generous keyboard; Excellent display; 3D function; Good application/gaming performance; Very quiet during load; Always very low surface temperatures

Always very audible in idle mode; Touchpad's stubborn multi-touch function; Scanty interfaces supply; Throttling during extreme load; No GPU-Switch (Optimus)

The predecessor's very quiet office noise. Any device can be loud and deliver performance, but maximum performance with minimum noise emissions was Asus G series' figurehead until now. That's too bad, even if the G74SX is still unrivaled quiet during load

ASUS G74SX - The Stealth Bomber

Ever wanted to know if more VRAM or if those hybrid HDDs with built-in SSD cache really work for gaming needs? We investigate with the ASUS G74SX, a 17.3-inch gaming notebook with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M GPU and 3GB VRAM, Core i7-2670QM (2.2GHz)...

Non-reflective screen ; Bundled Steelseries Siberia Headset and ROG Mouse ; Decent battery life

Mid-range GPU ; Mushy trackpad buttons ; Weak audio subsystem ; Very heavy

The Asus G74SX is a decent and reasonably priced gaming notebook that will handle most games just fine. If you’re looking for something similar to Alienware styling but without the S$4k price tag, this might be a consideration but if not, there are...

ASUS G74-SX-A1 Gaming Notebook Review

previous generation 17-inch G73SW not long ago and it earned high marks with team HH as well. This class of machine is definitely bulky however, though not that many gamers would mind. Now, the G73 is being phased out in favor of the Asus G74 series,...

Solid CPU & GPU combination ; Excellent overall design ; Plenty of storage ; Beautiful display ; Relatively strong battery life

Mediocre speakers ; Some performance inconsistency ; An SSD would be nice (although it is an option in other configurations)

Performance Analysis: On Asus’ Web site, the company claims that this notebook can hit P2008 in 3DMark11 and P9180 in 3DMark Vantage--but we hit P2222 and P10012, respectively. It’s not often that lab-tested scores actually surpass what's advertised. ...
