The ASUS X550CA-DB31 offers an attractive 15-inch chassis, strong audio, and costs just $449, making this a good budget Windows 8 laptop.

Attractive design; Good audio; Responsive touchpad; Affordable

Short battery life; Limited port selection

With an attractive design, strong audio and a low price, the ASUS X550CA is a solid sub-$500 notebook. However, you have to be willing to live with a few compromises, such as limited viewing angles and mediocre battery life. At this price, we prefer...

Asus VivoBook X550CA review

The screen could be better, but this is a well-priced laptop that gets the best out of its old hardware

Nevertheless, screen and battery life issues aside, the Asus VivoBook X550CA is still a marked improvement over its predecessors. Its Ivy Bridge processor may be showing its age, but it can still compete with other budget laptops in raw performance,...

ASUS X550CA-XO113H Laptop

At £329.99, can this budget laptop compete with its more expensive rivals?

Incredible value ; Impressively quiet and cool ; Decent touchpad and keyboard

Feels cheap ; Slow Celeron processor ; Unimpressive screen

To be entirely fair, we shouldn’t expect anything more from a £329 laptop, and its perfectly fine for everyday use - it should just be noted that the screen is one of the more obvious areas of cost saving.

Good deal

I picked up the refurb for 299 with a $50 MIR which made it cheaper than the 11" model but was unable to redeem the rebate because it did not come with a UPC. Newegg CS told me that they would send me a gift card for the amount but has yet to do so,...

I was able to get a sub 30 second boot by just adding an ssd to this laptop even with dual boot into Ubuntu

On the Linux side, everything seems to work except that the touchpad seems glitchy (and coincidently is not centered on the device due to the superfluous number pad). Its a tad on the heavy side, but then again I was LOVING my chromebook for exactly...

First time buying refurbished...

For what I paid, I am happy, if not slightly disappointed that it isn't touchscreen (which wouldve made it the purchase of the century). As a poor college student, this laptop is my savior and is unquestionably better than my 10 lbs Toshiba laptop...

Price: the price was incredibly low, almost like that "too good to be true* (see below). For 405$ including an additional 1 year warranty, that's a great deal, methinks ; Shipping: I completed my online order Thursday at 12 pm. I was unwrapping it the...

Misleading: The listing states that this device is a TOUCHSCREEN. Let me be clear. It is NOT. After sheepishly poking my screen like a simple minded fool for a couple minutes, I realized it must have been too good to be true. Not gonna lie, the...

Great for the price

The laptop functions really well, we just don't like the microphone. I tested the hard drive usage and health and it was only used for a day and a half!! All of these decent specs for ~$375 (tax+shipping). Very cheap, in my opinion, for a brand-new...

Fast for the price! no weird stutters or noticeable lag during normal usage. I uninstalled bloatware and optimized it ; It has a touchscreen for that price, awesome, my wife is happy. The screen is pretty thin also so it almost feels like you're using...

Terrible microphone! I don't know if mine is defective but the microphone is horrible! No matter how loud you speak you sound like you're drowning. You have to get really close, I mean within 5 cm close to the mic so that you're heard a bit clearly,...

In another review an ASUS representitive states that the alternate writing are simply fn keys, however make no mistake that this keyboard has french writing on it.

Decent laptop for the price

The keyboard is bilingual, several keys also have french writing on them

Don't skimp on a refurbished machine if you can. Buy a new product with support and software included. I am very unhappy with my purchase and will never buy a refurbished laptop again.

It is a good looking machine with a nice finish and full keyboard. Large hard drive

Windows 8, no support, no software, refurbished. Within a week of receiving the laptop it stopped working. It is stuck on Windows update loop and needs a full restore or boot. Want to restore the machine to OEM? You can't because there is no software...
