Robust, elegant case; 2.1 sound system from Skullcandy; Pleasant input devices; Solid multimedia performance; Optional backlit keyboard

Weight; Battery Life; No SSD in the configurator

If Dell's Inspiron 17R SE is interesting in this configuration, then having a look at Samsung's 550P7C-S02 and MSI's GE70-i789W7H might be a good idea. Another alternative to the Asus' N76VZ-V2G-T1011V.

The Acer Aspire 7740G with the same GPU and CPU would be a competitor worth mentioning in the 17 inch division. Or even the Asus K52JR-SX059V. There is the Samsung R525 Eikee NP-R525-JS01DE for AMD fans, but from the 15 inch division.

Dell Inspiron 17R-5720

The Dell Inspiron 17R (model 5720) is a desktop replacement laptop that delivers impressive performance at a budget-friendly ($699 list) price point. It offers the very latest Intel (Ivy Bridge) technology, a bright (albeit reflective) 17-inch screen,...

Solid productivity performance Reasonably priced. Uses the latest Core i5 technology. Robust audio output

Short battery life. Reflective screen. Integrated graphics

The new Dell Inspiron 17R (model 5720) desktop replacement laptop offers solid Core-i5 performance at a very reasonable price. You don't get much in the way of battery life and the integrated graphics solution is nothing to rave about, but it is a good...

Dell Inspiron 17R

Desktop-replacement laptops, with big 17-inch or larger screens, are less common than they used to be. Even Apple has sunsetted its only 17-inch model. Of the handful that are left, most are high-end systems aimed at gamers or multimedia producers,...

The Dell Inspiron 17R is a big, desk-filling laptop for not much money, built into a similar chassis to Dell's recently reviewed, and more expensive, 17R SE model.

The Inspiron 17R has low screen resolution for a 17-inch laptop, no discrete graphics, and no clickpad.

If you need maximum screen size at a minimum price, the basic 17-inch Dell Inspiron 17R is powerful enough for everyday tasks, but the lower screen resolution is a constant reminder of its budget origins.

Dell Inspiron 17R SE

The Dell Inspiron 17 SE 7720 offers a full 1080p display, impressive graphics performance and Adobe editing software in an attractive 17.3-inch package.

A little bulky; Below-average battery life

Click to EnlargeDell crams a lot into the Dell Inspiron 17R SE 7720 for a rather affordable price. For $1,099, consumers walk away with a 17-inch notebook that has a bright full HD display, powerful graphics for playing the latest games and a robust...

Dell Inspiron 17R SE

My initial thought on seeing this new Dell Inspiron 17R SE pulled from its box for the first time was, "Wow, does anyone still make laptops this big?" It's doubly surprising, as we've talked about the latest generation of Dell Inspiron laptops at some...

The Dell Inspiron 17R SE has a quad-core Core i7 processor, decent graphics, and a big 1080p screen.

The thick, inelegant body won't impress anyone. For the money, I'd rather have a high-end GPU and midlevel CPU than the other way around.

Dell's Inspiron 17R SE packs reasonably high-end parts into a budget-feeling chassis, saving a few hundred dollars or more over similarly configured laptops.

Dell Inspiron 17R

Dell's Inspiron 17R desktop replacement laptop is a study in clean, simple design. It's also highly configurable and supports many of the latest technologies such as USB 3.0 and Intel's Wireless Display (WiDi). And as you might guess from the 17R...

State-of-the-art components and ports ; Nice minimalist design

Slightly soft feel to the keyboard

Subtle, elegant looks and adequate performance highlight this desktop replacement.

Dell Inspiron 17R

The Dell Inspiron 17R delivers strong graphics performance and audio for a good price, along with fun switchable lids.

For $899, the Dell Inspiron 17R offers a great display and audio with plenty of performance for multimedia mavens and even gamers. Its impressive battery life, while not necessary on a desktop replacement, is a bonus. Our only major complaint is the...
