Dell XPS 12 Ultrabook review: Haswell refresh adds performance

Dell's cleverly designed laptop/tablet improves with new CPUs. It runs faster and lasts longer, but is still premium priced.

Keyboard not exposed in tablet mode ; Outstanding battery life ; Includes 802.11ac Wi-Fi adapter

Heavy, especially when held in one hand ; Occasional delay in screen-orientation switch ; Only two USB ports

Dell's XPS 12 is better as a notebook than as a tablet, but it remains one of the best convertibles on the market.

Dell XPS 12 (2012)

Resurrects the flip-and-fold display. Intel Core i7-3517U processor. 256GB Solid-state drive. Long battery life. Comfortable keyboard and touchpad

A better laptop than a tablet. Limited port selection

The Dell XPS 12 hybrid ultrabook/tablet features a flip-and-fold display, providing ultrabook specs and performance with tablet functionality.

Dell XPS 12 review (2013)

Last fall marked a renaissance in laptop design. With Windows 8 on the horizon, manufacturers built truly exciting notebooks with high-res touch screens, clever back-flipping hinges, superb...

Excellent 1080p touchscreen display ; Solid keyboard and audio quality ; Good battery life

Touchpad is still finnicky ; Few ports ; Cumbersome as a tablet

Finally, a real choice for Windows ultraportable buyers

Dell XPS 12

If you can get over the Dell XPS 12's screen acrobatics, this convertible ultrabook is a good way to get both tablet and laptop functionality in one unit.

Comfortable keyboard, trackpad, and touch screen. Improved battery life. Carbon fiber construction. Works like a clamshell laptop or as a touch screen tablet

Function keys require two presses. Heavy and bulky as a tablet. Limited port selection. No HDMI without an adapter

The Dell XPS 12 (29 DNCWI16B) ($1,199) convertible ultrabook is an update to a previously reviewed iteration with the same name. Now the system comes with Intel's fourth-generation Core i5 processor, which gives the user hours more computing time....

Dell XPS 12 Ultrabook

That system was an underpowered touch-screen Netbook (if you remember those) that worked ok as a cheap laptop, but made for a clunky, hard to use tablet (part of the blame went to Windows 7 ). The idea came back in an ultrabook that was renamed the XPS...

The Dell XPS 12 is a slim rotating-screen hybrid with a high-res display and improved battery life.

The accelerometer can get confused when flipping the screen around and the fan gets very loud. It also lacks an SD card slot and HDMI output.

This updated version of Dell's XPS 12 hybrid adds newer CPUs for improved battery life, but still works better as a laptop than a tablet.

Dell XPS 12 Review: A Jack of All Trades Flipscreen Ultrabook

Dell's XPS line is for their premium consumer offerings, with some overlap between the consumer and professional users gravitating towards these systems. The XPS 12 Duo carries that “catering to a wider audience” mentality a step further with a flip...

While the XPS 12 isn’t flawless, it’s a very interesting laptop nonetheless. To my knowledge, no one else is really trying this flipscreen approach; that’s either good news or bad news, depending on why most companies take an alternative route. If...

Review Update Dell XPS 12-9Q33 Convertible

All's well that's Haswell. The critically-acclaimed Dell XPS 12 r

Beautiful design; Solid and thoughtful construction; Excellent battery life; Very fast system performance; Capable integrated GPU; Bright and responsive multitouch display; Great keyboard; Spacious touchpad

Uncomfortable temperatures when stressed; Could use a third USB port

All of this adds up to one of the very best convertible Ultrabooks to date, and there really isn’t much out there in the way of true competition. Only the Sony Vaio Duo 13 comes to mind, which features a better screen and a lighter weight, but still...

Dell XPS 12 convertible Ultrabook review

The swivel-screen XPS 12 offers clever design, solid build quality and a high-quality (if reflective) screen. Battery life is not great, though, and this system is severely lacking in connectivity — even by ultrabook standards.

Cleverly designed and solidly built convertible tablet ; Tactile keyboard ; High-quality 12.5in. screen

No Ethernet port ; No SD card slot ; Moderate battery life ; Heavy when used in tablet mode

If you can get by with no Ethernet port or SD card slot and just two USB ports, and you really need tablet and notebook usability in one machine, this is a great way to get it. Note, though, that Dell is currently quoting a shipping date of early April...

Dell XPS 12

Good looking, excellent IPS display and great keyboard, top quality materials, good performance

Heavy for tablet use, no digital pen option

The Dell XPS 12 is a very likeable and powerful full Intel Core convertible Ultrabook with an excellent full HD display, superb keyboard and beautiful fit and finish. We're taken by the carbon fiber surfaces that aren't just cool looking: they make for...
