Review Dell Wireless Dock D5000

All-in-one Wireless Docking Solution. The underutilized 802.11ad band is put to the test with Dell's first wireless docking solution to provide untethered USB 3.0, HDMI, DisplayPort, Ethernet, and audio. It's only compatible on select few Dell...

When moving the dock further away until 5 meters apart, a separate CDM run returned even lower numbers. Repeating the same test when the dock was positioned on the left or right side of the notebook resulted in random disconnects akin to physically...

Dell Wireless Dock D5000

The Dell Wireless Dock D5000 is the first laptop dock to use the promising WiGig technology, and it provides convenience and extra ports to Latitude 6430u owners.

Fast. Supports multiple displays. 3 USB 3.0 ports. HDMI and DisplayPort

Only currently compatible with the Dell Latitude 6430u. You must be facing the dock to maintain a strong connection

The Dell Latitude 6430u (HD+) that I just reviewed came to us with an optional extra, the Dell Wireless Dock D5000 ($269.99 list, $187 when bought with Dell Latitude 6430u), which is just what the name indicates: a wireless docking station. It's the...

Review: Dell’s Wireless Dock D5000 really does free your laptop from cables

The technology is great—provided you like the one laptop model it's currently compatible with.

Requires absolutely no physical connection between the notebook and dock ; Can drive two displays with resolution up to 1920 by 1200 pixels each ; Three USB 3.0 ports, audio, and gigabit ethernet

Dock is currently compatible only with Dell's Latitude 6430u Ultrabook ; Very limited range—about six feet ; Limited to DisplayPort 1.1 (can't daisy-chain displays) ; Does not support HDCP

Dell's Wireless Dock D5000 is awesome—as long as you don't mind being tied to Dell's Latitude 6430u Ultrabook.

Dell Wireless Dock D5000 review

But the bad thing about notebook docking stations is that you can have a rough time disengaging the laptop from its dock. Connections at both ends - the dock and the laptop - tend to be fragile, and they can become unreliable over time.

Other manufacturers are expected to jump into the WiGig docking station pond eventually, so we'll revisit this review as more products hit the market. For now, the D5000 has strictly limited appeal. Dell's Wireless Dock D5000 is awesome - as long as...
