HP Envy Spectre XT review

Three years ago, HP introduced the Envy 13. This week, we're reviewing its spiritual successor, the Envy Spectre XT. Oh, how times have changed. Then, as now, the Envy was accused of cribbing from Apple's MacBook playbook. Then, as now, it's a shiny...

Excellent keyboard and trackpad ; Solid lower chassis ; Full-size HDMI, Ethernet, and SD card slot

Sub-par display ; Weak upper chassis ; Relatively poor battery life

Don't care about the screen? This is your machine

HP Envy Spectre XT

As the current flagship of HP's laptop line, the new Envy Spectre XT certainly packs a lot of names into one product. This is a premium ultrabook, and our understanding is that the Spectre designation now indicates a level of product above HP's already...

Slim and lightweight, the HP Envy Spectre XT is portable, well-built, and easy to use, with a great keyboard.

The design doesn't stand out as much as the original Spectre's did, and its battery life won't get you through an entire day. From a premium product, we'd expect a higher screen resolution.

A high-end laptop at a mainstream price, the HP Envy Spectre XT gets much of the look and feel right, with only a few missteps.

Attractive, well-built design ; Very solid performance ; Comfortable keyboard and touchpad ; Two-year warranty

Short battery life ; Unimpressive audio

The HP Envy Spectre XT is a solid contender, with a comfortable keyboard and touchpad, an attractive design and top-notch performance. The one downside is less-than-stellar battery life.

HP Envy Spectre XT

The HP Envy Spectre XT is a 13-inch Ultrabook laptop that has great performance, a comfortable backlit keyboard and a sleek design. It does lack in screen resolution and has a noisy fan but it's an overall good buy for less than $1000.<p

"Poorly made laptop"

Webcam has never worked properly. It disconnects every time I touch the lid which makes the usb-disconnect warning sound. I had to disable it in the device manager. Did not try to contact HP about the issue. However, Ive been a huge HP fan for many...

Slim and light. Boots quickly.

Flimsy lid and DOA webcam.

"The XT laptop meets my needs for creative writing."

I can easily bring this laptop everywhere. The battery usually gets me through the days meetings and travels. The cloth cover keeps the surfaces scratch free. I am pleased with this purchase.

I was attracted to the XT's weight, I5 Ivy Bridge, ample port arrangement, lighted keys, quick start, two year warrantee and WiDi. The simple look is attractive and easy to keep clean.

Mouse pad behaves unusually. The black frame makes it difficult to know where the screen and frame meet. I should have waited for the touch screen.

"Balky webcam and poor service. Stay away!"

An attractive package and good feature set in an ultrabook. Intermittent webcam functionality has been a problem since day 1. Computer has been returned to HP twice, and they have been "unable to replicate the problem", doing nothing more than "clean...

Good feature set, attractive design

Webcam works intermittently. HP service has failed to address and won't replace.

The follow up to the company's original Ultrabook contender this new model shaves off over 5mm in thickness from the original.

HP Envy Spectre XT review

HP attempted something radical with the original Envy Spectre Ultrabook. Completely enclosed in scratch-resistant glass, it was one of the best looking laptops we've had pass through our labs. For its sequel, HP has been more restrained, using an...

Great looks, good SSD, but we don't like its display

HP Envy Spectre XT hands-on

The HP Envy Spectre XT is an aluminium ultrabook that makes a good first impression thanks to its slick design. It's expensive, starting at £899, so we'll be looking for impressive performance and battery life when we review it fully.

Sleek, metallic design ; Slim and lightweight ; Ethernet port

Some will miss the glass covering on the Spectre 14 ; Expensive
