HP Mini 311 reviewed with earnest, ION-enhanced affection

It's taken longer than we thought for a honest-to-goodness NVIDIA ION-powered within arm's reach, but sure enough the HP Mini 311 accomplishes just that. Laptop's managed one of the first reviews, and much like what the site intimated with earlier ...

HP Mini 311

The HP Mini 311, the first Ion-based netbook on the market, can handle 720p and 1080i videos better than Intel graphics-based netbooks, but 1080p clips and high-end gaming are another story.

Better graphics than Intel-based netbooks. Big 11.6-inch widescreen. Good resolution. HDMI-Out port included.

Keyboard is only 92 percent of full size. Mouse buttons are noisy. ION can't handle high-end games and didn't deliver on 1080p playback.

HP Mini 311-1000NR

Commuting to work this morning, I was playing Left 4 Dead on HP's Mini 311-1000NR--that's right, on a netbook. Few netbooks are up to that task, and HP is first to market with an nVidia Ion-based portable. The 3.22-pound, 11.4-by-8.0-by-1.2-inch Mini...

An honest-to-God discrete GPU in a netbook ; Reasonable power for the price

Glossy screen a little tough for outdoor use

While still in testing, the first Ion netbook so far delivers on its promise: The first truly affordable netbook that can play games and HD video has arrived.

HP Mini 311 Review

The HP Mini 311 promises the best possible netbook experience thanks to the use of Nvidia's Ion graphics. Can this netbook with an 11-inch screen, HDMI, and a great keyboard overcome the limits of Intel's Atom processor? Keep reading to find out.

Nvidia Ion graphics boost performance ; Improved port selection ; Good battery life

Still using weak Atom processor ; Good graphics limited by CPU ; Touchpad surface isn't great

HP Mini 311

To say that netbooks have historically been hobbled by Intel's integrated graphics is to unfairly ignore their slow single-core CPUs, 1GB RAM maximum, miniscule keyboards, and awkward screen resolutions. It's an unfair assertion, of course—netbooks...

Current-gen graphics; great screen; HDMI out; 1366x768 res; good build; supports up to 3GB DDR3

Mushy keyboard; still stuck with single-core Atom processor

Though the Mini 311 is still hampered by the long-in-the-tooth Atom N280 processor, the Ion graphics make up for it. HD video and actual gaming capability on a netbook, plus HDMI-out and up to 3GB of DDR3 RAM? Heck yes. The Mini 311 is only the first...

HP Mini 311-1037NR Netbook Review

Earlier this year Verizon Wireless introduced their first netbook, the HP Mini 1151NR, which was then followed by the Gateway LT2016u and HP Mini 110-1046NR. All of which used the outdated, but reliable, Windows XP SP3 Home Edition. The new HP Mini...

Netbook Review: HP Mini 311

Another enjoyable feature, though not a plus-sized one, is the Mini's keyboard. A fraction smaller than desktop size -- the A through apostrophe keys span 7.5 instead of 8 inches -- it offers an intuitive layout (with Ctrl and Delete keys in their...
