Core i5 processor offers solid performance. Over nine hours of battery life. Extensive wireless features like WiDi 2.0 and WiMAX 4G broadband. Fingerprint reader. Sleek aluminum chassis. Beats Audio software onboard. USB 3.0 ports.

No backlit keyboard. Screen falls short of full 1080p HD. Bloatware.

HP Pavilion dv7

The ; is a nice-looking big-screen laptop with long battery life and very good performance for the money.

The dv7's screen is low-resolution for its size and its integrated graphics drag down the performance some.

If you're looking for a lot of screen real estate and enough power for work and play, the HP Pavilion dv7-6b55dx is a good place to start.

Sexy metallic design. Big battery included. Close to 6 hours of battery life. Big, bright screen. Spacious, fast 640GB drive. Blu-ray drive included. Terrific speaker system. Fastest Core i5 available.

Touchpad needs a makeover. Graphics performance was disappointing.

The HP Pavilion dv7-4183cl's new components, including a faster Core i5 processor, 6GB of DDR3 memory (from 4GB), and bigger battery, are more dominant than anything else you can buy at this price.

Sexy metallic design. Even bigger battery now, which delivered 6 hours of battery life. Big, bright screen. Spacious, fast 500GB drive. Blu-ray drive included. Terrific speaker system.

Touchpad needs a makeover.
