Huawei Mate S review: Style and camera skills but at too high a price

Although the Huawei Mate S can take great photos, and looks good doing it, its high price is difficult to swallow.

The Huawei Mate S takes sharp photos, it has enough power for everyday tasks and its metal design look and feels great.

It's too expensive, Huawei's custom Android is messy to use and the pressure-sensitive display is a pointless addition that adds nothing to the overall experience.

Though Huawei's flagship Mate S has classy looks and a great camera, you can find better-performing top-end phones for less money elsewhere.

Huawei Mate S (luxurious gold)

Even buying the phone is difficult to do, with Huawei's own UK website directing you to a Chinese-language online shop. The phone itself has some highlights to boast about, including an attractive metal body and a good camera, but Huawei's custom...

Huawei Mate S (Unlocked)

The Huawei Mate S is a sharp-looking Android smartphone with a crisp display and a good camera, but it can't handle gaming very well, and has a heavy, unappealing UI layer.

Attractive design. Crisp AMOLED display. Good camera performance. 128GB internal storage and microSD slot. Loud speakers.

Force Touch is mostly just a gimmick. Heavy UI layer. Struggles with high-end gaming. Frustrating button placement.

Software and Conclusions When it comes to software, the Mate S is certainly not the phone for lovers of pure Android. The device runs Huawei's Emotion UI 3.1 on top of Google's Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. Huawei makes a number of iPhone- customizations,...

The Huawei Mate S Review

Huawei has been a company which over the past few years has visibly increased its presence in western markets. The Chinese vendor has in particular executed a big push into European markets over the last year as devices have become increasingly...

In the end I'm not sure if that was all that great of a decision for costumers as the Mate S carries a lot of the more crippling aspects of previous Huawei flagships.

Huawei Mate S Smartphone Review

Mirror, mirror in my hand … The Mate S is definitely one of the most beautiful smartphones that are currently available on the market. Whether it is all only beautiful illusion or the new style-icon from China has more to offer can be discovered in our...

Top notch build, Swift system performance, Expandable storage, Decent cameras, Outstanding call quality, Good speaker, Extensive accessories, Long-life battery

No Force Touch at market release, Dubious price design, Only middling GPS, No MHL, Miracast or Slim Port support, No UHD videos, LTE Cat. 4 only, No infrared port

Huawei's Mate S is a successful smartphone that primarily convinces with its outstanding build and stylish design. It provides great battery runtimes, a decent camera, first-rate call quality, and an up-to-date operating system in the form of Google's...

Huawei Mate S Review

From the point of view of Huawei's product portfolio, the Mate S is a weird addition to its high-end roster. A mixture between the P and Mate lines, the S strikes a balance between thinness and size, all the while hitting the right notes when it comes...

Comes with a flip cover included ; Seriously attractive design ; Solid construction ; EMUI 3.1 has all the features you might want ; Selfie camera is up to snuff

Display needs work ; EMUI 3.1 poses some fundamental user experience issues ; Recent apps menu is clunky and awkward ; Main camera has problems with focus a bit too often ; General camera performance is inferior to the best out there ; 1080p video is...

At €649 in Europe and about the same in green through Amazon US, the Huawei Mate S is aimed at the premium market, and it definitely looks the part. Of course, that alone hardly exhausts the list of requirements you bring to the store when you're ready...

Huawei Mate S Review

The Mate S is Huawei's flagship smartphone and boasts an eight-core, 2.2GHz processor paired with 3GB of RAM. Its camera has a resolution of 13 megapixels and can record 1080p video at 30fps, while the lens boasts optical image stabilisation, a fast...

Huawei Mate S review: touch made irrelevant

We take Huawei's latest flagship, the Huawei Mate S, for a spin to find out if it's a worthy successor to the company's outgoing flagships.

: If Huawei hacked R3000 off its price, renamed it the P8S (perhaps) or slapped Force Touch on all models, then maybe the Mate S would’ve made sense. This phone is another example of what looking over your shoulder does to your own brand identity. It...
