Huawei MateBook X Pro review: A polished yet quirky laptop

Huawei's fourth laptop looks like a MacBook Pro clone, but manages to add in features that make it better for pros on the go. A traditional USB A port and a 14-inch display in a 13-inch body are both big pluses, plus excellent audio that makes it a cut...

Well-engineered USB-A port is a welcome addition ; Beautiful 14-inch display in a 13-inch frame ; Good battery life

It’s expensive in Europe and may be pricey over here ; We still don’t know if and when it’ll actually arrive in the US ; Webcam placement will annoy some people ; Potential trackpad issues that we need to examine further

Because Huawei has been so reticent to talk about US pricing and availability, it's hard to offer definitive recommendations. After all, it may be hard to find over here and may be available only in limited quantities in Europe, making it an...

Huawei MateBook X Pro review

Odd webcam aside, the MateBook X Pro is a beautiful machine with a top-notch display.

Simple yet functional design ; Good keyboard, great touchpad ; Bright, high-contrast display ; Great speakers for the size ; Solid battery life

Weird webcam location ; MX150 performs behind similar competitors

Huawei MateBook X Pro

With a sleek aluminum body, ample computing power, and superb audio quality, in some ways, the Huawei MateBook X Pro is a better ultraportable than the Apple MacBook Pro that inspired it.

Superb audio quality. Comfortable, oversized touchpad. Thin, sleek design. Screen aspect ratio makes editing documents easier. USB-C and USB 3.0 ports.

Awkward webcam placement.

Bottom Line: With a sleek aluminum body, ample computing power, and superb audio quality, in some ways, the Huawei MateBook X Pro is a better ultraportable than the Apple MacBook Pro that inspired it.

Huawei’s new MateBook X Pro is the best laptop right now

You won't find another laptop with more bang for your buck

Immaculate materials and design ; Big, bright display with very small bezels ; Great keyboard and trackpad ; Lots of power ; Both USB-C and USB-A ports

Terrible webcam ; Average battery life ; Occasional fan noise

Simply put, if you are looking to purchase a new laptop for productivity or entertainment, the MateBook X Pro should be at the very top of your list.

Huawei MateBook X Pro Review

I couldn't help but make a comparison to a MacBook right out the box when I first opened the Huawei MateBook X Pro. This is a device that's taken some definite design cues from the MacBook Pro - the latest round of MacBook Pros, at least. It runs...

Unique webcam placement ; Thin, svelte industrial design ; Lightweight ; Dolby Atmos enhanced 4x speaker system ; USB-C power ports and great battery life

Price could be more competitive ; Camera placement needs some getting used to ; Keyboard isn't quite perfectly tight ; SD card slot not included

Huawei MateBook X Pro review: Minimal bezels, touchscreen, and excellent sound with secure camera placement

It's like a MacBook, but with a 91 percent screen-to-body ratio, more ports, better sound, and a touchscreen display.

High quality design, fit, and finish ; Gorgeous 13.9 inch display with 91 percent screen-to-body ratio ; Solid battery life ; Liquid resistant keyboard ; High screen-to-body ratio with minimal bezels ; Compelling Dolby Atmos quad-speaker system ; Fast...

Expensive ; Camera embedded in the keyboard can produce odd results ; Keys are a bit mushy and loose

Huawei MateBook X Pro review

Huawei has made a name for itself in the smartphone space over the past few years, but the company is still pretty new to the PC space, having launched its first Windows tablet in 2016 and its first laptops in 2017.

The Huawei MateBook X Pro is thin and light, has an attractive design with an all metal chassis, a high-resolution display with slim bezels, and better-than average speakers.

Huawei Matebook X Pro review: No longer just a MacBook clone

Huawei's strategic choices make this new laptop much better than the original.

Sleek, all-metal design. ; Bright, bold touchscreen. ; Includes one USB Type-A port. ; Fingerprint reader integrated with power button. ; Recessed camera for more privacy. ; Insane battery life.

Heavier than the original. ; Recessed camera placement looks up your nose. ; No IR camera. ; Still can only share data with Huawei smartphones using the "My Phone" feature. ; Still uncertain US release date and price.

While the Matebook X was little more than a MacBook clone running Windows, the Matebook X Pro achieves much more than that. By beefing up its size and weight, Huawei managed to elevate this laptop into a device that can properly compete with similar...
