Lenovo IdeaPad Y580

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 ($1,099 direct) is, quite literally, a big idea. In addition to its large physical frame, it almost completely eliminates the need for a desktop PC, sporting a huge screen, built-in Blu-ray drive, and a full-sized keyboard....

Excellent gaming and multimedia capabilities. Bountiful port selection. Built-in Blu-ray player. Fantastic display. Solid speakers. Full-size keyboard. WiDi

Bulky. Some bloatware. So-so battery life

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 is a robust desktop replacement laptop, displaying exceptional gaming and multimedia capabilities while packing a dazzling screen with 1080p resolution, a Blu-ray drive, and even a full-sized keyboard.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y580

You know that laptops today are getting remarkably skinny when you can say things like this: At 6.2 pounds, Lenovo's IdeaPad Y580 weighs twice as much as the typical ultrabook. Sometimes heft has its perks, though: In this case, the Y580 more than...

Fast performance ; Vibrant speakers and display ; Sleek, backlit keyboard ; Prompt-responding touch pad

Stiff touch-pad buttons ; Touch pad off center due to numeric keypad ; Too heavy for daily commutes

The IdeaPad Y580 is an admirably fast 15-inch laptop built for entertainment as well as work or school. It's a bit bulky for commutes, but a good deal at around $1,200.

Great Laptop

The addition of a mSata drive put this laptop into a whole different league. For me at least, having a professional looking laptop was paramount. It would be very embarrassing to attend conferences and pull out some behemoth with crazy paint and...

Best performing laptop you can find under $1000 ; Screen looks great (even though its not 1080) ; 10key ; Simple and professional looking ; Speakers surprisingly good ; mSata port

Screen isnt 1080p ; can get a bit hot when running games/large programs. This isnt really a con as it is expected, but prepare to get a cooler-stand for it

Absolutely disappointing screen. Not all Y580s the same!

I didn't buy the exact same Y580 as the one listed here, but the version I got came with the same screen this one comes with.

Performance is good for gaming

I made a big mistake by only looking at performance and not being aware of the two different screens the Y580 comes with. I bought a Y580 because I wanted a good gaming laptop, so I did a lot of research into graphics cards and decided that the Y580...

Great buy

Great buy, really the only difference between this and the more expensive ones is the screen res, and the Blue ray and I havn't found myself missing the pixels much yet though they would be nice from time to time.

Fast system (bf3, Skyrim, COD all run great) ; nice to have numberpad ; idles decently cool ; screen seems fine even with it being lower res ; Optimus is great for when not gaming ; Battery Life not terrible for gaming laptop

can get hot (has reached 90C) and the heat vent is right over WASD keys so you feel it a little though I rarely notice ; Keyboard with numpad can be a bit to get used to

Some models are great; not this one.

Note that the fact that this laptop comes with a "Core i7" processor should not be a selling point, for the majority of users. Game performance depends far more on the GPU ("graphics card") than it depends on the processor, and basic usage is...

We bought a Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 for my sister for College. I can attest first-hand to its excellent game performance, and to its excellent audio quality ; The GTX 660M GPU (what some call the "graphics card") in the Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 is capable of...

However, this was not the specific model we bought. The main difference between the model we bought and the model for sale here is that our model came with the 1920x1080-resolution display and this model comes with the 1366x768 display. This difference...

Mostly excellent, with a few notable caveats

I love, love, love NewEgg's customer service and recommend buying from the if at all possible; I would have were it not out of stock when I needed a new laptop. Most of the problems in the "con" section above can be fixed by the user. In spite of the...

Display and power: Brilliant screen, better than I've seen on any laptop under $1400. Speedy i7 processor that's marginally faster than the more common (at this date) 3610QM at the same price. The 660M graphics are great, and most of my games are fluid...

The drives. The hard drive is 5400 rpm, which completely cancels out any benefit from the SSD caches; one would be much better off eliminating the cache and going up to a 7200 rpm hard drive or an SSD. Also, with the 1080p display (the lowest model is...

Almost perfect ...!!

Great looking...FULL HD screen ... Nice color and looks ... What I don't like is the POWER DVD 10 that comes with the laptop; it is very old and I cannot PAUSE my blu-ray movies, if I do then the program will freeze and the operating system (Windows 7)...
