Lenovo ThinkPad E540

This heavyweight foregoes mobility, allowing the use of high-end hardware at a very nice price.

Blazing-fast CPU paired with GT740M GPU ; Reasonable price

Sub-HD resolution display ; Some testing issues

If you don't mind lugging this 2.44kg brute around with you, the E540 delivers a powerful package at a very competitive price. Unfortunately it's pipped at the post by the more affordable Gigabyte U24Ti5, although the E540 is the quicker of the two...

Three severe hardware problems

All in all, I really like this laptop. I can put up with problems 1) and 2), but the WiFi disconnects are driving me out of my mind ! I still need to try out Intel's latest WiFi driver version 17.16.0 .

Great screen, keyboard, touchpad (yes, the touchpad, despite what some others say about it), fast and cool processor, sleek looks, fast HDD. Good battery life (~4 hours)

1) The audio from the output jack really sucks. While loud enough it is very muddled. However, the audio from the speakers is moderately good ; 2) The HDMI output has failed to the point of constantly and reconnecting/reconnecting as if there is an...

ThinkPad Edge E540 Notebook i7 Processor

Great computer for an old guy like me who likes speed, accuracy, and a great computing experience. Probably not for those of you younger gamers, but a decent pc nonetheless

Probably not for gamers

Fast, upgradeable, linux-compatible, though not perfect laptop

This is a reasonably-priced, linux-compatible, fast, upgradeable laptop. It's also weakly-supported, Chinese-made, and probably only somewhat above average in build quality. SO if you buy one, plan to run it hard for the first week or two and exercise...

I ordered this system because it has a Core i7 processor, upgradeable RAM, and was listed as "Ubuntu Certified" and "Red Hat Certified" (though that doesn't necessarily say much; see Cons below) ; The laptop comes pre-installed with Windows 7...

There's an annoying BIOS bug that keeps the machine from suspending under any linux operating system. I have an open ticket with Lenovo about that. The workaround is to TURN OFF USB3.0 in the BIOS. (The USB ports still work, but only as USB2.0.) ; The...

Warning about Finger Print Scanner!!!

Warning about Finger Print Scanner ; If you buying this notebook and you want to use the finger print scanner to login; Don't buy it, it does not work on windows 7. It may work on windows 8, but I did not tested on win8 ; Every thing else is good, but...

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E540 Intel Core i5 4200M 2.5GHz 4GB Memory 500GB HDD 15.6

Even though it is Wireless N, it does run at 300 Mbps rather than the standard 150. My wife and kids have Lenovo E530's, this E540, is a bit thinner and lighter, easy to carry around. Lenovo quality is the best. My wifes screen cracked after the laptop...

Excellent Value and quality for the Money ; Hard Disk is 6Gbs 7200 RPM single platter and 32MB cache at a thin 7mm so you are getting a very nice drive in a well priced system ; 4GB Mem, while that may not sound great, systems sold with 6MB seem like a...

Would have been better with a wireless AC board rather than the wireless N. It has a N7260 Wireless N board and my system has lately been randomly dropping the connection speed down to 5 Mbs until I disable then re-enable the adapter. This has occurred...

Update on review

This is an update to my previous review. Although it took a bit to hear back from the seller on fixing the broken key, once they reached out it was pretty fast. They sent a return box for me to mail the laptop, and I got it back within 2 days! Laptops...

Fast processor, good overall design
