Review Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E431 Notebook

Affordable productivity. Lenovo's latest update to the ThinkPad E

Great build quality; ABS plastic construction seems quite durable; Very good keyboard; Stable performance under load; Adequate battery life; Clever proprietary OneLink implementation; Matte display finish; Easy maintenance

Dim and unremarkable screen; Questionable integrated touchpad button design; No metal in sight; Heat and noise are slightly higher than the competition; Pricey storage upgrade options

Even still, however, there are no stinging criticisms or deal-breakers to mention—only minor complaints and nitpicks overall. There’s certainly fierce competition to be considered—most notably in the form of Toshiba’s Tecra R940-1FL, Dell’s Vostro...

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E431

We recommend small business owners buy a true business PC like the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E431 rather than trying to repurpose a consumer budget laptop. It will pay off in comfort, performance, and peace of mind.

Windows 7. Nice price. Removable battery. Good multimedia performance. Sturdy, comfortable keyboard. Dual pointing devices. Fingerprint reader. Function keys work as icons first, F1-F12 second. Matte finish screen. Large multi-touch trackpad

Middling battery life. USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports are both black. No 5GHz Wi-Fi support. 1,366 by 768 resolution

The E431 has a comfortable keyboard, dual pointing devices, security features like a fingerprint reader, and you can grab one for less than $600. It's our latest Editors' Choice for small business laptops.

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E431 review

When Lenovo bought IBM's personal PC business in 2005, it inherited the company's already well-respected business-centric ThinkPad laptop line. Since then, Lenovo has been fairly conservative about updating the look and design of its business and...

Excellent spill-resistant keyboard ; Low price ; Roomy touchpad ; Runs fairly cool and quiet, even under load

Poor quality screen ; Short battery life ; Doesn’t feel as solidly built as pricier ThinkPads ; No niceties like a backlit keyboard or solid-state storage

Budget users who do a lot of typing will love the E431’s keyboard and low price. But the screen and battery life are a bit of a bummer, and most will want to wait for an update with Intel’s new, more efficient CPUs.

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E431

The ThinkPad Edge E431 offers the durability and dependability we've come to expect from Lenovo's small business laptops, in a 14-inch system with an excellent keyboard and pointing stick.

Responsive keyboard; Accurate touchpadpointing stick; Available with Windows 7; Convenient dock

Mediocre viewing angles; Sub-par battery life with default battery; Slightly heavier than some competitors

The Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E431 has a lot to offer for little money. At a starting price of less than $500 ($649 for our configuration), you get an attractive business-oriented laptop with a fantastic keyboard, an accurate pointing stick/touchpad combo,...
