Lenovo ThinkPad P52s

A rare workstation-grade ultrabook, Lenovo's ThinkPad P52s offers professional Nvidia Quadro graphics for buyers seeking ISV certifications, but factor in a battery upgrade: The basic power pack falls short of the mark.

Thin, light design. Great keyboard and touchpad. Professional-grade Quadro graphics. ISV certifications. Removable battery scheme.

Subpar battery life with base battery. Gets pricey with added options. Cooling fan can be noisy. Chassis gets toasty under load.

Bottom Line: A rare workstation-grade ultrabook, Lenovo's ThinkPad P52s offers decent CPU pep, plus Nvidia Quadro graphics for buyers seeking ISV certifications. But factor in a battery upgrade: The basic power pack falls short of the mark.

Lenovo ThinkPad P52s

From its military-tested durability to its long battery life, Lenovo's ThinkPad P52s has all the hallmarks of a portable workstation ready for constant rigorous performance. The P52s ($1,996 as tested, $1,011 starting) packs an 8th-Gen Core i5 CPU,...

Awesome keyboard; MIL-STD 810G durable; Crisp 4K display; Powerful speakers; Very good battery life

Below-average graphics performance; Runs warm; Awful webcam

The ThinkPad P52s is a durable 15.6-inch workstation with dynamic speakers and long battery life, but its graphics leave something to be desired.

Lenovo ThinkPad P52 (i7, P1000, FHD) Workstation Review

Traditional powerhouse. Despite the media attention stylish ultrabook workstations such as Dell's XPS 15 receive, traditional portable workstations like the Lenovo ThinkPad P52 are still the backbone of the workstation market. How well does the latest...

robust well-made case ; excellent input devices ; FHD display has been improved significantly over its predecessor ; good selection of connectivity ; variety of security features ; fast PCIe NVMe SSD ; quiet cooling system ; surface temperatures lower...

upgradeability somewhat complicated (special tools needed for keyboard) ; cooling system heavily taxed by the entry-level SKU ; fan is hard to reach ; poor speakers ; minor coil whine ; CPU throttled on battery ; touchpad with plastic surface ; FHD...

For its third-generation ThinkPad P50-series Lenovo opted for a careful evolution instead of a revolutionary redesign. This evolutionary step referred to as ThinkPad P52 turned out very well by and large as it incorporated many of its predecessor’s...

Lenovo ThinkPad P52s (i7-8650U, Quadro P500, 4K) Laptop Review

Pushed to the limit. The P52s is back, this time with an improved screen and a slight bump in processing power. Is the 4K display an improvement for the P52s, or is the display too much for the weak GPU?

excellent ThinkPad keyboard ; well-built case ; relatively slim profile (with smaller battery) ; hot-swappable batteries via Power Bridge ; good battery runtimes ; Thunderbolt 3 and docking port ; good selection of other ports ; crisp 4K screen ; quiet...

inconsistent performance ; thermal throttling is present ; Quadro P500 is weak and erratic ; driver issues with GPU (possibly due to beta drivers) ; games have resolution issues ; hot spots get very warm ; no quick charge options

The Lenovo P52s sits in a peculiar spot. Lenovo's attempt at marrying energy-efficient components with a workstation-class device is a story of compromises. While the goal of a ULV-powered workstation is closer than ever thanks to Intel's Kaby Lake R...
