Does this offering impress?

The NEC Versa S9100 isn't going to change most people's perception of the NEC brand, it's rather too run-of-the-mill in looks and specification for that. However, underneath the rather basic spec-list is a machine that is comfortable and easy to use...

NEC VERSA S9100-1203DR

For mobile computing, a strong, yet lightweight notebook is essential. It's also important that it has enough built-in features to tide you over until...

Very well built, long battery life, built-in optical drive, comfortable keyboard

No solid-state drive, no slot-loading DVD burner, no ExpressCard slot, no dock or port replicator option

A capable and solidly built ultraportable that's worth considering. It could use some refinement, but its strong case, built-in DVD burner and long battery life are major positives.

A lightweight marvel with solid business credentials, but little glamour

Pros: Lightweight yet has DVD writer; great security features; battery life Cons: No webcam; mono speaker; bland styling Overall: A lightweight workhorse with more features than a Macbook Air, but none of the glamour

NEC's contribution to the ultraportable market is tougher than most, but it still struggles against the competition

NEC tries to muscle in on the ultra-portable space with the dainty-looking but tough Versa S9100.

NEC Versa S9100 review

Offering one of the toughest bodies in the market with long battery life, the NEC Versa S9100 would have been a serious contender if it had a more reasonable price point.

Exceptional battery life; strong chassis able to withstand up to 300kg/f of pressure; strong security features; holds an integrated optical drive despite its light weight; bright LED-backlit screen

Weak warranty terms; no spill-resistant keyboard; pretty expensive for an average feature set

The NEC Versa S9100 is too costly for an ultraportable with middling features. Its key redeeming features, however, lie in the exceptionally strong chassis as well as impressive battery life.

Sasha Muller reviews NEC's shiny new ultraportable, the super light and tough Versa S9100.

There's little reason to spend over a grand on a laptop these days. With the likes of Dell's Inspiron 1525 providing an impressive package for less than £500, laptop manufacturers are having to try harder and harder to justify breaking the £1,000...
