Samsung Series 5 550 Chromebook review

There are good reasons why schools will like the idea of Google's Chromebooks. They're affordable, there's money to be saved on licences and software, they're quick to boot and easier to manage, and users can sign in to their own desktop.

With a higher specification and facilities for offline use, the Chromebook is now a more viable choice for schools

Intel Core i7 processor (super fast/responsive). Brilliant screen. Fantastic speakers. Plenty of USB ports and storage space. Overall great for home entertainment and my animation/graphic design work

Battery life is pretty average. Quite heavy (although I'd expect this considering the screen size)

Samsung Series 5 550P

Runs nearly all the programs/games I've tried at max settings ; RFactor = Max ; GPbikes = Max ; Dead Space 3 = High>Max ; Max Payne 3 = High>Max ; Bioshock 3 = High>Max ; Minecraft = Max ; Crysis 3 = Med>High ; Far Cry 3 = High>Max

No lid open button/toggle so opening the lid can be clumsy/awkward ; Windows 8 doesn't bring much to the package without a touch screen interface

Samsung Series 5 550P

Excellent performance, very quiet, very good at performing multiple tasks, brilliant new windows 8, very pleased with display performance, plenty of hard drive space, amazing sound quality

Very short battery life when unplugged from power source, drains even quicker when performing more complicated tasks ; 17" display is a little too big for carrying the laptop around
