Origin EON17-SLX review: It sets new records, but calling it a laptop is a stretch

Seventeen inches wide. More than 10 pounds of heft. A socketed Core i7 Skylake CPU and a desktop GTX 980 card crammed inside. More graphics horsepower than any laptop we've ever tested. When does a laptop cease to be a laptop? Origin's EON17-SLX might...

Desktop CPU, desktop GPU, desktop performance ; Semi-upgradable, if you're interested

Massive ; Underwhelming screen, considering the price

Packing a socketed desktop Intel CPU and a full desktop GTX 980, Origin's EON17-SLX is barely a "laptop" at all.

Origin EON17-SLX review

Powerful but impractical, the Origin EON17-SLX fits a niche.

The base price of the EON17-SLX is just north of $2,000, but our review unit arrived with a price tag of $3,900, which included a three-year warranty. Without that, you’re looking at about $3,600. Which is a lot. Yet the price doesn’t damage value as...

Origin Eon 17 SLX

The Origin Eon 17 SLX offers a jaw-dropping amount of power with a slick chassis and a high level of customization -- if you can afford it.

Elegant inviting design; Strong performance; Face-melting graphics performance; Fast boot and transfer times; Highly customizable specs

Dull screen colors; Awkward mouse-button placement; Expensive; Heavy; Fan gets loud when gaming

Every time we think Origin can't top itself with the overpowered bells and whistles, something like the Eon 17 SLX falls into our laps. Its dual Nvidia GPUs delivered the best graphics numbers we've seen this year, and its CPU and SSDs were also among...

Origin EON17-SLX

When financial limits are tossed to the wind, you'll find laptops that offer higher-than-high-end components, opting for absurdly powerful processors instead of the slimmer, battery-friendly CPUs used elsewhere. You'll get not one, but two discrete...

Overclocked quad-core processor. SLI graphics. Giant, fast storage. Customizable keyboard lighting. Windows 8

Crazy-expensive. Delicate 4-pin power jack

The Origin EON17-SLX high-end gaming laptop has the latest and best of everything, from an overclocked quad-core processor to SLI graphics. It's a mean machine, but it costs serious green.

Origin EON17-SLX review:

It's telling that the very first thing I did with this new Windows 8 version of the Origin EON17-SLX desktop replacement gaming laptop was to try and swipe past the Windows 8 lock screen with my finger.

The insanely powerful Origin EON17-SLX can easily handle any PC game, and is configurable enough to fit many budgets. Service and support are stellar.

The generic-looking off-the-shelf body isn't becoming in a $4,000 laptop; Windows 8 feels odd without a touch screen.

No one puts together custom high-end gaming laptops, including this desktop-busting 17-inch EON17-SLX, better than Origin, but you'll pay for that expertise.

Origin EON17-SLX Review and Ratings

With a phalanx of top-line components, a nice 1080p screen, and excellent audio, this overclocked, dual-GPU gaming rig is ready for just about anything. We only wish its exterior looked a bit less generic.

Stunning performance ; Flashy customizable backlit keyboard ; Decent battery life, considering components

Jaw-dropping price tag in test configuration ; Boxy, generic Clevo shell ; Touch pad could be better

Despite its boxy, generic-looking shell, the Origin EON17-SLX is a stunning performer in our test configuration, with a phalanx of top-notch components that put up some of the best benchmark numbers we've seen. And even shaving $2,500 or so off the...

Origin EON17-SLX review

This gaming laptop is a desktop PC in disguise

Nearly unrivaled performance ; Sharp, aggressive styling ; Big, bold sound

Awful battery life ; Astonishingly heavy

What's that, you wanted desktop power in a gaming laptop? Well, you finally have it with this 17-inch monster. But it comes at the cost of portability and a hefty chunk of your paycheck.

Origin EON17-SLX

Cramming the most high-end parts into a massive 17-inch body will top AU$5000, but you also get a powerful laptop that has more next-gen gaming muscle than any living-room console.

Very powerful ; Highly configurable ; Thunderbolt included

Expensive ; Can't compare with custom designs
