Asus WL-500g Premium Wireless Router review

Asus WL-500g Premium Wireless Router

WDS; integrated print server; USB port; embedded DDNS clients; excellent 802.11b/g performance.

User documentation is poor; weak phone support; lacks WPA support.

The Asus WL-500g's advanced features make it well suited for hobbyists, but its complexity and weak user docs make it a stretch for those new to networking.

ASUS WL-500G Premium Review

ASUS is known for making motherboards, but that's not all it makes. Today we got our hands on an ASUS wireless router, the WL-500G Premium. Will it stand up to the company's reputation for quality, or should ASUS have stuck to making motherboards? Keep...

ASUS WL-500g Premium Router

Routers are often boring, but ASUS proves that doesn't have to be the case. The WL-500g is a very fast WiFi router that offers USB connectivity and even the ability to download while your computer is turned off!

High-performance ; Great styling ; Admin is feature packed ; Allows network storage ; Manual is easy to follow

Setup can be quite clunky ; Router copies over a fair amount of system files to the thumb drive/external storage

The WL-500g Premium is a router that has a lot going for it. Compared to the previous D-Link WiFi router I had, this is a huge upgrade. The sad fact may be, that both routers retail for a similar SRP. So, "You get what you pay for." may not always...

It still lives... After so many years in service

I can only say I am very happy with it, despite a problem i had. I got it when it first came out and it works just as it's supposed to. I must admit I had some problems with it as I had a powerout while I was updating it and it resulted in a dead...

Tons of features and dual USB2 ports.

Can be very hard to revive if FW update fails.

Excellent with OpenWRT

I didn't bother with the default ASUS firmware, so I can't say anything about that.

NONE!!

How Technically inclined are you?

Best Range connectivity and speed I have ever had.

Wouldn't go online until I changed to a 3rd party firmware from guys at WL500 forum.

best router for third-party firmware

This is the best and cheapest hardware for third-party firmware such as OpenWRT, DD-WRT and so on.

If you're not looking for a wireless device to install OpenWRT, DD-WRT or a similar third-party firmware on, you may want to look elsewhere.

Great router for OpenWRT

This is one of the routers to get for third party firmware, such as OpenWrt: - Decent CPU (266MHz) - 8MB of of flash - 32MB of RAM - 2 USB ports At this price you won't find a better router for use with custom firmware.

None.
