Samsung Ativ Book 9 (2015) review: A slim 12-inch laptop that doesn't skimp on ports

Before Apple even announced its slim, lightweight 12-inch MacBook , Samsung had already released a nearly identical product. First seen at CES 2015, the Samsung Ativ Book 9 matches the MacBook nearly spec for spec.

Samsung fits a good number of ports into its very slim 12-inch Ativ Book 9. The system gets the best battery life to date from a Windows system running a Core M processor.

Shorter battery life than Apple's very similar 12-inch MacBook, and a matching configuration costs more. The lack of a touch screen and small touch pad aren't ideal for Windows 8.

This very usable 12-inch laptop is a good, if expensive, tool for websurfing and casual use, but would benefit from better battery life.

Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite review: What does it take to make an $800 version of a $1,400 Ultrabook?

It is what it sounds like. The Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite, announced at the same time as the ATIV Book 9 Plus, is a mid-range version of the company's flag

Thin and light, especially for a machine in this price range ; Low-glare display ; Comfortable keyboard ; Fast disk speeds

Performance hiccups ; Short battery life ; Touchscreen wobbles when you touch it ; Finicky trackpad

Samsung naturally had to cut corners to make an $800 version of its flagship Ultrabook, but the performance and battery life here are inferior compared to other laptops in this price range.

Samsung Ativ Book 9 Lite review: It's like a laptop for your Galaxy phone

Unless you intend to take full advantage of Samsung's SideSync technology, you'll find far better notebooks on the market.

SideSync is a good feature—if you have a Samsung mobile device ; Smooth, accurate touchscreen ; Good overall performance

SideSync is difficult to set up ; Trackpad feels cheap ; Lots of bloatware

The Ativ Book 9 Lite is a good notebook if you also own a mobile Samsung device and intend to use the two together; otherwise, it's just average.

Samsung Ativ Book 9 Lite ( marble white)

The perfect sweet-spot $799 touch-screen Windows 8 ultrabook has been made already : we've reviewed several, in fact. But, those configurations tend to get discontinued.

The Samsung Ativ Book 9 Lite has a touch screen, feels reasonably sleek, and handles everyday tasks reasonably well.

A plastic design, underwhelming display and battery life, and underpowered AMD processing.

Samsung’s latest budget spin on a Windows touch-screen, AMD-powered, ultrabook-esque laptop has some flair, but the corners it cuts aren't worth the money saved.

Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite review

Netbooks may be dead, but the idea of low-voltage computing hasn't been buried with them. On the contrary, it's now mainstream, and some laptops that don't earn the Ultrabook label now ship with low-voltage processors rather than more powerful (and...

Good build quality ; Excellent keyboard ; Very thin and light ; Cool and quiet operation

Very poor performance ; Battery life is only competitive at load ; Lackluster display ; Overpriced

Well-built and boasting an excellent keyboard, the ATIV Book 9 Lite could be a real contender among affordable laptops. Unfortunately, it’s let down by the processor, which offers netbook-grade performance and merely average battery life.

A glossy finish can't mask this Samsung's shoddy performance.

Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite review

Windows 8 is beginning to embed itself into the public knowledge and we're getting more and more used to the concept of touchscreen laptops. And that's the exact where the affordable, sub-£500 Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite fits in.

Decent trackpad, responsive island keyboard, thin and of fair weight for size, affordable, decent battery life, we like the way it looks

Plasticky build, screen ought to be higher resolution, screen reflections, AMD processor limitations

The first ATIV model that we've seen for review breathes fresh life into the Samsung laptop range. The Book 9 Lite is a good looking, albeit fairly plasticky, 13.3-inch offering that's affordable and just as on the money when it comes to all those...

Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite review

Samsung gives its coveted Series 9 a budget makeover

Price ; Decent trackpad ; Spacious keyboard ; Good battery life ; Portable

Poor screen ; Plasticky build ; Rebranded processor ; Below entry-level speeds ; Fiddly connectivity

This is a budget laptop masking as an ultrabook, bringing the looks but lacking the oomph and features found aplenty in its competitors.

Samsung Ativ Book 9 Lite review

Its keyboard feels very plastic to the touch but offers a comfortable and tactile experience. The Lite's trackpad is more impressive with a large area to work with and the kind of responsiveness not regularly associated with cheaper laptops.

Samsung's Ativ Book 9 Lite is only around one-third the price of the Plus model. This means a plastic chassis and cheap screen and processor, while keeping an impressively thin and light form factor. Component downgrades mean this laptop is no...

Samsung Ativ Book 9 Lite

Samsung creates an almost perfect budget laptop

Stylish design and solid build ; Comfortable keyboard ; Decent battery life ; Excellent value

Very average screen ; Slightly sluggish processor

None of this makes the Samsung Ativ Book 9 Lite impossible to use, but films and photos lack the punch they do on pricier laptops. But it's the reflections that irk most, which makes opting for non-touchscreen version the best bet in our book. Not only...
