PC Plus review: Samsung M70

The M70 is clums. We wait in hope for a 15 or 12in incarnation to really gain the best of both the portable and desk-bound worlds.

Samsung M70

Much admired for its innovative and experimental designs in everything from microwaves to mobile phones, Samsung has again thrown out the rulebook and tried something utterly different.

There's a couple of design issues here. The concept is great, but we feel it could have been executed a little better. We're terrified by the price tag - although the M70 is a versatile piece of kit, is it really worth two grand? If you value...

Samsung M70 review

The M70 is an enormous laptop, which you'll never want anywhere near your lap. Despite this, its ingenious detachable 19-inch screen is a joy to use, and while its performance is only average, it belies its girth to deliver stunning battery life. If...

Large, high-quality, detachable screen with separate stand ; Great full-size keyboard

Small number of IO ports given its size ; Too big to fit in most bags

Perhaps the ultimate desktop replacement notebook, Samsung's M70 has a detachable 19in. screen, a separate monitor stand and a full-sized keyboard with a separate number pad. If you want to take it on your travels, you'll need a suitcase.

Superb screen, both in terms of size (19in.) and image quality ; full sized keyboard with separate number pad ; detachable screen with monitor stand ; good performance and excellent battery life

Far too large and heavy to carry around on a regular basis

Using the standard MobileMark 2002 test, which runs nine real-world programs (Microsoft Word 2002, Excel 2002, PowerPoint 2002, Outlook 2002, Netscape Communicator, McAfee VirusScan 5.13, WinZip 8, Macromedia Flash 5 and Adobe Photoshop 6.0.1), the...
