Review Sony Vaio VPC-SA3X9E/XI Notebook

A lean and mean performer. The latest Intel Core i7, a middle-class AMD graphics card and an SSD in an top quality upper-class subnotebook. Can the Sony VAIO attract the target group?Does the Sony Vaio appeal to you? ...

Flat shape ; Matt materials ; USB 3.0 ; Blu ray burner ; Fast CPU + GPU ; Large touchpad ; Fast SSD

Dark display ; High temperature emissions ; Very loud at load ; Modest battery life

Such high performance packed into a small case and combined with an optical drive

Black Beauty. Sony's Vaio S range currently encompasses over 24 m

First-rate workmanship; Good equipment; Very good screen

Partly loud fan; Power-consuming, dedicated graphics

There is plenty of competition in this performance and size category. We would mention the Sony's sister model Vaio VPC-SE1Z9E/B, HP's Envy 15-3040nr and Asus' U44SG as its current contenders.

Dark Waters. The Gothic creator Piranha Bytes has turned to a medieval fantasy world in its recent pirate RPG Risen 2. Despite partly outdated technology, the title creates a very special atmosphere. We test which graphics card is required for optimum...

Except from the Xesia M501 (ForceWare 296.17) and the One M73-2O (ForceWare 295.93) GPU driver version ForceWare 296.10 or Catalyst 12.4 were used

Elegant design; Good manufacturing quality; Compact size

Weak display; Moderate battery life; Overall, unconvincing battery life

The immediate competition also relies on AMD's E-450 processor and is called Samsung 305U1A, MSI Wind U270 or Lenovo ThinkPad X130e among others.

Private business. It seems like Sony sticks to this brief motto e

Nice design, great feel; Quiet in Stamina mode; Slim and yet has a lot to offer; Pleasant keyboard; Outdoor suitable screen

Videos stutter intensely in energy saving mode; Reduced battery runtime compared to last year; Extremely loud during load; Heavy throttling during full load; Very treble-heavy speaker sound

The similar notebooks mentioned above.

Ultimate workstation with old shortcomings? Sony refreshes its Z

High CPU performance; Swift SSDs; Weight of less than 1.2 kilograms; High resolution; Bright and contrast rich screen

Deformable case; Input devices require getting used to; Disappointing speakers; Fan is very loud during load

Apple's MacBook Pro 13, the previous Sony Vaio VPC-Z21Q9E/B, Samsung 900X3A, and in view of size as well as portability, even single current ultrabooks such as the Asus UX31.

Sony VAIO VPC-YB35KX

The Sony VAIO VPC-YB35KX is a competent netbook, with an AMD APU that offers a decent combination of processing and graphics, and a healthy feature set that includes stereo Bluetooth, HDMI, and two card reader slots. Its battery life is a bit of a...

AMD Fusion APU offers versatile processing and graphics perfromance. Full-sized, comfortable keyboard

Battery life falls short of competition. Keys rattle. Touchpad is small

Sony Vaio VPC-YB35KX/B

The Netbook is dead; long live the new Netbooks. Atom-toting 10-inch laptops might be a thing of the past, but the 2011 trend of sticking low-power processors in small-screened computers is alive and well. However, this time, the result is a far better...

The Sony Vaio YB35KX/B has a lot of hard-drive space, solid performance from an AMD E-450 processor, and long battery life; this 11-incher has the portability of a Netbook, and it's reasonably affordable.

The cramped keyboard and touch pad make this Vaio feel more like a Netbook from 2010 than an ultrabook from 2011, and it lacks USB 3.0.

The more affordable and better-performing Sony Vaio YB35KX/B is a modest improvement on the last YB model we reviewed, adding up to a full-featured but cramped 11-inch laptop that'll cost a lot less than an ultrabook.

Sony VAIO W Series VPC-W111XX/P (10.1" - Atom N280 - Win XP Home - 1 GB RAM - 160 GB HDD)

Sony's first foray in to the world of Atom-powered laptops was the Vaio P-series Lifestyle PC , which sported a unique miniaturized design (about the same footprint as a standard business envelope), but was hampered by input issues (no touch pad), and...

High-res display; cool color combos; typical high-quality Sony construction and design.

Poor battery life; better display adds a $100 premium; smallish keyboard; loud fan.

Attempting to create a premium-priced version of a Netbook, Sony has added an HD display to the Vaio W. It's an attractive step-up package, but the internal components are the same as are in cheaper models.

Sony VAIO VPC-SE23FX/S

The VPC-SE23FX/S's 15.6-inch widescreen offers an eye-popping 1,920-by-1,080 resolution display, the same resolution seen on the HP Envy 15 (2012). It's ideal for enjoying movies in full HD, except that you'll need to find those movies somewhere other...

Slim build. Light weight. Has 1080p display. Long battery life, doubled by an extended battery slice. Complimentary silicone keyboard skin is a nice touch

Performance lags behind peers. Manual graphics switching (with a physical switch) is a drag. No Blu-ray drive

The Sony VAIO VPC-SE23FX/S is a competent desktop replacement laptop with long battery life and a healthy feature set, but a few fumbles, like manually switching graphics, keep it from ranking higher.
