Toshiba Kirabook 13 i7s Touch

With a brilliant, bright WQHD screen and premium components, all housed in a chassis that weighs less than three pounds, the Toshiba Kirabook 13 i7s Touch is a dream ultrabook.

Brilliant 2,560-by-1,440 resolution screen. Very light. Premium materials and look. Two-year warranty, including tech support and Internet Security. Includes Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements.

May have to adjust zoom or screen resolution for apps.

With a brilliant, bright WQHD screen and performance to match, the Toshiba Kirabook 13 i7s Touch earns our Editors' Choice nod for high-end ultrabooks. Though it's a little pricey, the new Kirabook, with premium components housed in an attractive...

Most of the original Kirabook's shortcomings have been addressed, but Toshiba's competitors haven't stood still.

Beautifully sleek and lightweight design ; High-res display (and support for a 4K external monitor) ; Luxurious customer service

Max refresh rate of 30Hz with external 4K monitor ; Default "eco" power plan suppresses performance ; Expensive

This Haswell-class Kirabook is a big improvement over the original, but its price-to-performance ratio remains high.

Toshiba Kirabook (2014) review

The first generation of Toshiba's Kirabook was an ambitious shot at creating a high-end product with MacBook-like buzz. That slim 13-inch magnesium-alloy laptop was even the first post-Retina PC we'd seen with a better-than-HD screen resolution -- a...

The slim, lightweight Toshiba Kirabook still feels very premium, and it deserves credit for being one of the first Windows laptops to feature a better-than-HD display. Thanks to an updated CPU, battery life is now good enough for all-day use.

Higher-res screens are more common now, and available for less. The generic brushed-metal look isn't particularly distinctive given the price.

The design of Toshiba's high-end Kirabook hasn't changed since last year, but it has aged gracefully. The components get an update and the battery life gets a big boost, making this an all-around excellent, but expensive, ultrabook.

Toshiba Kirabook 13 i5 Touch

Despite many excellent high-end features, the original Kirabook fell short because its design didn't move the needle much, battery life was underwhelming, and the least-expensive model skipped the touch screen, despite a $1,600 price.

The Toshiba Kirabook aims high

With a 2,560x1,440-pixel, 13-inch display, this is a serious PC rival to Apple's Retina MacBook Pro.

The ; is made of superior materials and has an unusually high-resolution display.

The design doesn't wow, considering the high price. Battery life is merely OK, and the least expensive version omits a touch screen.

Toshiba's ambitious Kirabook has a screen that rivals Apple's MacBook Pro with Retina Display, and a price to match. It's a solid, useful laptop, but for these prices, the design should really be more exciting.

Strictly Top-Shelf

1080p is old news. Ultrabook resolution is about to get crazy, and the first ultra-resolution-ultrabook to hit the market is this pint-sized powerhouse from Toshiba, which packs 2560 x 1440 pixels into a 13.3-inch screen, a first for a machine of this...

Toshiba Kirabook

The Toshiba Kirabook ultrabook has a breathtaking screen, and a price tag to match.

Brilliant 2,560-by-1,440 resolution screen. Very light. Premium materials and look. Two year warranty, including tech support and Internet Security. Includes media creation apps (Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements). Three USB 3.0 ports and...

No 802.11ac or 5GHz Wi-Fi. Small bezel makes some touch gestures inconvenient. May have to adjust zoom or screen resolution for apps. Integrated graphics.

COMPARISON TABLE Compare the Toshiba Kirabook with several other laptops side by side.

Toshiba Kirabook review

What makes one laptop worth $700 and another worth $2,000? That's a tricky question, and one that has bedeviled PC makers looking to join a handful of companies such as Apple in charging a premium price for products that, at the end of the day, use...

Toshiba Kirabook review: finally, a flagship Windows 8 laptop

Typically when I meet with a manufacturer to talk about new products, they're coy about mentioning their competitors. They refer to "our competition," or "other players," or "similar devices." Every company wants me to believe it's the only company on...

Gorgeous, high-res display ; Small, thin, and light ; Great speakers

Too much of Windows isn't designed for high-res displays ; Some performance quirks ; A few small build quality issues

The Kirabook makes me really excited for the next version

Toshiba KIRAbook Ultrabook Review

As a notebook and now ultrabook manufacturer, Toshiba has always had an odd streak. I mean that in the most affectionate way possible; while their budget notebooks have been generally solid offerings for a good price (and typically preferable to...
