Piece of USELESS JUNK

I've had it for a little more than a year and everyday something goes wrong. I know how to use computers perfectly. Actually...I have a netbook that is a heck lot better than this piece of useless junk. Sadly I wasted on it and didn't realize how horrible it is! I can't wait until the day I burn it or drop it off a building -- so much stress will be released!

Toshiba Portege R705

Before there were netbooks, Adamos, Timelines or even a MacBook Air, there was the Portege. Toshiba's long-standing marquee for ultraportable notebooks never achieved the prominence of many of its more fashionable contemporaries, but the...

Thin and light ; Sturdy, stylish magnesium chassis ; Standard optical drive ; Comfortable supersized touchpad, firm keyboard ; Capable Core i5 processor ; Sharp 13.3-inch screen ; Surprisingly loud speakers ; Affordable price point

Lacks biz staples like keyboard light, 180-degree hinges ; Some intrusive preinstalled utilities ; Reflective screen ; Not enough grunt for all 1080p playback

Toshiba’s Portege R705 laptop is sharp at work, comfortable at play, and affordable enough for everyone.

Toshiba Portege R705-P35

Editors' note (April 4, 2011): Anyone shopping for the product reviewed here should note that it has been replaced with the Portege R835 series . Those 2011 models offer faster Sandy Bridge CPUs and better battery life.

Slim, upscale design; excellent keyboard and touch pad; includes Intel Wireless Display and built-in 4G wireless; solid value.

Missing dedicated graphics and Bluetooth; battery life merely average.

The Toshiba Portege R705 is as close to a perfect balance of design, price, and performance as you'll find in a Windows laptop.

Toshiba Portege R705 Review

Toshiba's Portege R705 is an unexpected addition to the company's ultraportable range. Based on the Portege R700 unveiled as part of Toshiba's 25th anniversary for notebooks, the R705-P25 is a Best Buy exclusive with an MRSP of $889.99 but a street...

That’s not to say this Best Buy special falls short. Toshiba took a risk putting their Portege brand to a (relatively) budget machine, and happily the risk paid off. While we might like to have seen Bluetooth instead of WiDi, the R705-P25 neatly...

Stuck on the Toshiba Portege R705's magnesium alloy palmrest is a shiny sticker celebrating the company's 25 years of "laptop innovation." Now, we're the first to hate on the plethora of decals that festoon Windows laptops these days -- and this one...

Incredibly light 3.2-pound chassis ; Great manufacturing quality ; Boasts Intel Wireless Display technology

Runs warm ; Shorter battery life than promised ; Small keys

An HDMI port and an SD slot are also included features. If you buy this particular configuration (Best Buy version), not only will you get the Navy Blue lid, but Intel's Wireless Display (WiDi) technology as well. WiDi is similar to wireless HDMI in...

As light as the Sony VAIO Z. Draped in fine metals. Good speed from standard volt Core i3 processor. Intel WiDi built in. Reasonably priced. Comfy keyboard. Very good battery life, especially if you buy the extended slice

Poorly built speakers. You'll need to buy the Netgear receiver ($100) to use Intel's WiDi

The Toshiba Portégé R705-P25 is a sweet alternative to the Sony VAIO Z, bundling a 13-inch widescreen, optical drive, and a standard volt processor.

Toshiba Portege R705-P35

The R705-P35 13.3-inch widescreen boasts a 1,366 by 768 resolution. A higher screen resolution in this price range is a rare find, which is why the 1,600-by-900 screens on the Sony Z116GXS and HP Envy 14 ($1,286 direct, 4 stars) are deemed luxuries....

Good speed from standard volt Core i3 processor. Very lightweight. Metal chassis. Intel WiDi built in. Intel WiMax built in. Reasonably priced. Comfortable keyboard. Improved battery life

Poorly built speakers. You'll need to buy the Netgear receiver ($100) to use Intel?s WiDi

The Toshiba Portege R705-P35 is a more practical alternative to the Sony VAIO Z, bundling a 13-inch widescreen, optical drive, and a standard volt processor.

Toshiba Portégé R705-P41

Toshiba's often-impressive Portégé ultraportable laptops seem to be getting ever better with age. Two years ago, the company blew us away with the Portégé R600, a sleek ultraportable that managed to squeeze an optical drive into an incredibly thin...

Very thin and light, yet has onboard DVD drive ; Fine office-app speed ; Long battery life ; Surprisingly low price

Disappointing keyboard and speakers ; Subpar Webcam

Optical drives are rare in ultraportables, but this Portégé delivers one, plus Core i5 speed and excellent battery life, at a remarkable price. It's a boon for frequent travelers on tight budgets.

"Awesome for a student"

I have had this computer now for over a year, packing it to and from campus in a backpack and giving it an all around beating. I've spilled milk on the keyboard and shaken it to death running to catch the train and it has kept running like a champ....

Light weight, portable, spill resistant keyboard, multi-touch track pad (two finger vertical and horizontal scroll, zoom, and page rotation) and HDMI out

there was no back lit keyboard option when I bought mine, speaker sound quality, heat generation and fan noise.
