Toshiba Portégé R835-P88 Laptop Review

Affordable Thin-and-Light. The lightweight Portégé series will be

Great CPU performance; Stable base; Easily accessible ports and expandability; Optical drive; Both USB 3.0 and eSATA; Precise multi-touch touchpad

High surface temperatures; High system noise; Weak lid; Narrow viewing angles; Low contrast; Poor outdoor usability/ Glossy screen; Average battery life; Spongy keyboard; Throttles when under very high loads

For the cost, the R835 offers quite the performance and a relatively large HDD in a chassis that is still above budget notebooks in terms of build quality.

Toshiba Portege R835-P94

Reviewing the Toshiba Portege R835-P88 is like revisiting an old friend. Previous versions of this laptop have won our coveted Editors' Choice Award, by offering excellent all-around performance in a slim, lightweight 13-inch body, for a lot less than...

This latest version of the Toshiba Portege R835 is still a great value, packing a big hard drive, optical drive, and full-power processor into a chassis not much bigger than an ultrabook.

This 13-inch laptop once felt thin and light, but similarly priced newer laptops beat it on style and portability.

This one-time favorite is still an excellent go-to 13-inch laptop, if you don't need something quite as slim as an ultrabook, and you can get it for the right price.

"Great compromise between weight and expandability"

[I must point out my laptop is an older model]

Comes with just about every feature and weighs about the same as an ultrabook. You can also change the battery, hard drive, etc.

Software bundle is horrible. I completely wiped the drive and re-installed. Lucky for me I had an extra copy of Windows because their backup software is horrible too and didn't work correctly.

Got a dud

Apparently this product is only available for replacement. I would rather be refunded, though, and get something else. Not at all impressed, and in fact, quite unhappy with this laptop - even if it's replaced with a non-lemon.

Speakers were crackly/unacceptable; keyboard continuously locked-up so it was not possibly to type. There are also several reviews of this laptop out there that cite the same keyboard lock-up issue. Completely unacceptable

Maybe Lightest i5 laptop w/ DVD drive

This is a mighty-mite laptop. I can't speak for gaming, but for other uses it certainly doesn't lack power or speed. It is built quite well by what I can tell (long-term is unknown) with a truly plastic free magnesium chassis. This laptop is very...

Rigid magnesium chassis ; Uber-lightweight (comparable to MacBook Air) ; Powerful i5 CPU ; Decent amout of memory shipped ; Optical drive ; Very Good Screen for size and resolution ; Battery Life is fantastic for power ; Runs cool and mostly quite

No dedicated GPU card ; Standard Keyboard (not backlit) ; No BD-ROM option ; Pin type barrel power cord connector (magnetic like Apple is better)

Ultralight computer – light on the pocketbook

This Toshiba Portege is the second one that we own. It is a very good laptop packs a lot of punch into a small package. When OfficeMax had it on sale, we jumped at the chance to get a second one to replace the older one, windows XP. That's how old it was.

Great machine!

I had an Asus laptop that I got at the beginning of my freshman year of college, and I loved it, but last week it literally fell apart and stopped working so I needed to get a new one. I wanted one that had a 13-14" screen, a decent amount of memory, a...
