Toshiba Portege R835-P88

The Toshiba Portege R835-P88 shows that an ultraportable can still kick ultrabook butt.

Only 3.2 pounds including optical drive. Speedy performance. Nice screen and keyboard. Good battery life. WiDi.

No backlit keyboard. No Bluetooth. Noisy fan.

Toshiba Portege R835 review: Toshiba Portege R835

Toshiba Portege R835

This latest version of the ; is still a great value, packing a big hard drive, optical drive, and full-power processor into a chassis not much bigger than an ultrabook.

This 13-inch laptop once felt thin and light, but similarly priced newer laptops beat it on style and portability.

This one-time favorite is still an excellent go-to 13-inch laptop, if you don't need something quite as slim as an ultrabook, and you can get it for the right price.

Toshiba Portege R835-P50X

The R835-P50X delivers a solid typing experience.. Every key has that perfect bumpy, deep response that you don't get from the flatter keys of the MacBook Air 13-inch and Samsung Series 9. It's like a Lenovo ThinkPad keyboard, except that all the keys...

One of the lightest in the 13-inch class. Superb typing experience. Aluminum design. Built-in optical drive. Standard voltage processor. Excellent performance. Superior battery score. Reasonably priced. WiDi2

Poor speakers

The Toshiba Portege R835-P50X is the epitome of what an ultraportable should be: Lightweight, relatively inexpensive, powerful, and equipped with enough battery life to last from dawn to dusk.

Toshiba Portégé R835-P88 Laptop Review

Affordable Thin-and-Light. The lightweight Portégé series will be

Great CPU performance; Stable base; Easily accessible ports and expandability; Optical drive; Both USB 3.0 and eSATA; Precise multi-touch touchpad

High surface temperatures; High system noise; Weak lid; Narrow viewing angles; Low contrast; Poor outdoor usability/ Glossy screen; Average battery life; Spongy keyboard; Throttles when under very high loads

For the cost, the R835 offers quite the performance and a relatively large HDD in a chassis that is still above budget notebooks in terms of build quality.

I would say a little pricey.

Consumer review (cnet.com)

Great compromise between weight and expandability

[I must point out my laptop is an older model] The main review says it all - this laptop is a full-featured fat ultrabook that weights 3-lbs and allows you to change the battery, hard drive, etc.

Comes with just about every feature and weighs about the same as an ultrabook. You can also change the battery, hard drive, etc.

Software bundle is horrible. I completely wiped the drive and re-installed. Lucky for me I had an extra copy of Windows because their backup software is horrible too and didn't work correctly.
