Toshiba Satellite U845W Review

Over the past couple of months, it's become clear that the way computer makers–those companies that specify and brand the actual physical device–need to make less models. It's because when you're optimizing for portability and battery life, what you...

Windows 8 could bring a new era of consolidated, simplified product lines. For now, that doesn’t seem to be the case–if anything, it seems to be encouraging even more diversification and experimentation. Of course, like natural selection, when there...

Toshiba Satellite U845W-S430

In an era of patent wars where the word "infringement" gets tossed around casually, one thing's for certain: Few, if any, manufacturers will ever claim that the Toshiba Satellite U845W-S430 ($1,085.99 as tested, list) ripped off their design. Even in a...

Wider display complements Windows 8's interface. Brushed aluminum finish and soft-touch texturing make for a handsome look

Wider screen is of limited utility. No optical drive. Shallow travel on the keyboard. No touch screen. Some bloatware

While it's a relatively decent performer, the Toshiba Satellite U845W-S430 falls short of ultrabook greatness by hinging almost entirely on a wider display whose utility is questionable.

Toshiba Satellite U845W-S430 review:

Windows 8 seems destined to be appreciated the most on computers with touch screens. It's not that you can't have a perfectly decent Windows 8 experience on a standard PC, but you're missing out on a good deal of the design it was intended for.

The wide-screen Toshiba Satellite U845W-S430 has an extra-long, higher-resolution screen, Harman Kardon speakers that pack a punch, and an attractive, compact design with plenty of ports.

The keyboard and touch pad are uncomfortable, the wide screen isn't a perfect marriage with Windows 8, and the screen doesn’t always play nicely with all streaming video content.

Toshiba's experimental extra-wide-screen ultrabook gets a Windows 8 software upgrade, but it turns the Toshiba Satellite U845W into a computer imperfectly matched for what Windows 8 has to offer.

Toshiba Satellite U845W-S430

How can a laptop maker make a splash with its new Windows 8 machine? How about with a uniquely designed wide-screen display? Like its predecessor, the $1,085 Toshiba Satellite U845W-S430 offers a 14.4-inch ultrawide display with a 21:9 aspect ratio...

Toshiba Satellite U845W Ultrabook Review: Going Wide at 21:9

It's sometimes very easy to discount Toshiba as an also-ran when it comes to the latest and greatest. They have a strong retail presence as a budget notebook company, and in many ways their first ultrabook, the Portege Z835 maintained that tradition by...

I've come away from my time with the Toshiba Satellite U845W with a largely favorable impression. What Toshiba has achieved here is very respectable and worthy of attention: they've designed a notebook that's pleasing to look at and by and large...

Toshiba Satellite U845W-S410

People have been using laptops to enjoy movies on the go for years. With an extra-wide screen and sweet-sounding Harman/Kardon speakers, the Toshiba Satellite U845W-S410 is targeted to be a dream laptop for movie lovers. But the oddly shaped ultrabook...

Extra-wide 21:9 screen is a boon for movie-lovers. Harman/Kardon speakers sound great

Display is wonky for everything but widescreen movies. Bloatware. Inconvenient dimensions

The Toshiba Satellite U845W-S410 will attract movie lovers craving extra-widescreen entertainment, but the 21:9 display winds up being more of an inconvenient gimmick than a feature.

Toshiba Satellite U845W-S410 Review: An Ultrabook for Film Buffs

This is a unique time in the PC business. After years of turning out boring, 15.6-inch laptops and midsize-tower desktop PCs, PC makers are experimenting with new and intriguing designs. Case in point: the Toshiba Satellite U845W. Available in two...

Unique, widescreen display ; Excellent audio quality

Keyboard lacks feedback; touchpad too sensitive ; Display colors seem muted; limited viewing angles

This elegant-looking laptop targets movie buffs, but it's not a good choice for productivity or gaming.

More Info Toshiba outs Satellite U845W Ultrabook with 14.4-inch, 21:9 display (updated: $999 and up in the US) The Ultrabooks of Computex 2012 Toshiba bows out of netbooks in the US, sees Ultrabooks as the wave of the future Ultrabooks now come in...

Powerful speakers ; Attractive design ; Decent battery life for a 14-inch laptop

Uncomfortable keyboard ; Flaky trackpad ; Display not compatible with most media

The U845W Ultrabook is the first laptop with a 21:9 display, but ultimately its odd, outsized dimensions are more of a nuisance than a boon.

Toshiba Satellite U845W and U845 review

Laptops in 2012 may be thinner and lighter than ever, but the form factor's otherwise been largely untouched. You get a keyboard, a trackpad, a 16:9 widescreen display, and some ports. One of...

Fantastic speakers ; Solid trackpad ; Good build quality

Display specs don't really make sense ; Expensive ; A little bit warm

21:9 screens just aren't meant for laptops

Toshiba Satellite U845W-S410 review: Toshiba Satellite U845W-S410

Now that ultrabooks have hit the mainstream, the evolution of slimmer laptops has started to undergo Darwinian mutation. Consider the oddity that is the Toshiba Satellite U845W: a compact Core i5 ultrabook that has a ridiculously wide 21:9-ratio...

A clean design, impressive-sounding speakers, an extra-large 14.4-inch wide-screen display, and good battery life make the Toshiba Satellite U845W a solid ultrabook with some notable extras.

That extra-wide screen, when it works with movie files, can be fun; but many streaming video services don't play nicely, and the U845W lacks a DVD player. The screen height is smaller than the average 13-inch laptop, and the keyboard is not that...

The media-geared Toshiba Satellite U845W has an extra-wide 21:9 screen and Harman Kardon speakers, but no DVD or Blu-ray player. The screen is a novelty act that offers some benefits, but it's really no better than your standard laptop for most uses.
