Toshiba Satellite L655-S5161

With numerous laptops spread across its L, C, A, M, T, E, W, and R series, Toshiba may not run out of new product lines until it runs out of letters. We're pretty sure the midprice L series is above the entry-level C series, and below the premium A...

The 15-inch Toshiba Satellite L655-S5161 is a good entry point for midsize laptops with Intel's second-gen Core i-series processors, and we've always liked the company's sleep-and-charge USB ports.

The design is strictly no-frills, and there are no high-speed data ports, such as USB 3.0 or eSATA. Plus, we hate the shortened spacebar on the keyboard.

Though not particularly inspiring, the basic 15-inch Toshiba Satellite L655 has a current-gen CPU and can be found for around $600, making it a worthwhile budget choice.

Toshiba Satellite L655-S5161x

A second-generation Core i3 processor gives the Satellite L655 strong overall performance, graphics punch, and battery life for a good price.

Here's a case where it's definitely worth paying a little bit extra to get Intel inside. The $620 Satellite L655 is faster, offers better graphics performance, and runs quieter than its AMD counterpart (which costs $598 from Walmart). Plus, the L655...

Toshiba Satellite L655D (S5164RD)

This 15-inch notebook looks good and is pretty comfortable to use, but you don't get enough performance for the price.

The Toshiba Satellite L655D is a good-looking laptop with a comfortable keyboard, good display, and some nice included software. While it handled web surfing, streaming video, and other everyday tasks just fine, its noisy fan was very distracting....

Toshiba Satellite L655D-S6051

There's no one standout feature on the Toshiba Satellite L655D-S6051 ($599.98 list), a low-end 15.6-inch laptop sold at Staples, other than the fact that it's based on AMD's new Vision platform. Performance from the AMD Turion II CPU is fair at best;...

Attractive design. Improved audio quality. Roomy keyboard and dedicated number pad. Responsive touchpad features multitouch gestures

Lackluster performance. Poor battery life. Clacky keyboard. No HDMI port

The polished design of the Toshiba Satellite L655D-S6051 makes it appear to be more than just a cheap laptop, but its performance and battery life prove it's nothing more than a low-cost option.

Toshiba Satellite L655-S5161RDX

The 15.6-inch widescreen has decent viewing angles, but I wouldn't say it's any better or worse than that of the HP dv6-6013cl and Acer AS5742-6475. Its 1,366-by-768 resolution is par for the course as far as low-cost laptops go. As I'm typing away on...

Fast Core i3 processor. Great battery life. Affordable. Attention-grabbing design. Full size numeric keypad

Loud mouse buttons. Keyboard design is not one of my favorites

The Toshiba Satellite L655-S5161RDX houses the latest parts from Intel, but is held back by a mediocre user experience.

Toshiba Satellite L655-S5161X

There's a nice graphics advantage with Sandy Bridge technology, a two-fold increase in frame rates compared with the previous-generation integrated graphics found in the Acer AS5742-6475 and Lenovo G560. The L655-S5161X's 3DMark 06 (4,551) and Lost...

Fast Core i3 processor. Great battery life. Affordable. Good-looking design. Full size numeric keypad

Loud mouse buttons. Keyboard design is not one of my favorites

The Toshiba Satellite L655-S5161X budget laptop houses the latest parts from Intel, but is held back by a mediocre user experience.

Toshiba Satellite L655-S5155

The included audio speakers are low quality, lacking good bass. For instance, trying to listen to Muse's popular "Supermassive Black Hole" was painful, as it caught all of the highs and none of the lows.

500GB hard drive. Spill-resistant keyboard. Little bloatware. Nice design

Poorly placed touchpad. Below average speakers. Slow performance

The Toshiba Satellite L655-S5155 makes up in user experience what it lacks in overall performance. This machine will fit all your basic e-mail, web browsing, and Word processing needs.

Toshiba Satellite L655-S5096

If cost is your primary concern when shopping for a laptop, the Toshiba Satellite L655-S5096, available at Best Buy, makes a compelling case for itself. Priced at $499.99 (list), it looks like a serious model that could legitimately command an even...

Large display. Keyboard includes 10-key pad. Attractive design

Mediocre performance. Not for 3D gaming

Priced just under $500, the Toshiba Satellite L655-S5096 is more physically attractive than it is an outstanding performer, but if you don't need to do anything too taxing there's nothing wrong with this sleek-looking laptop.

Toshiba Satellite L655-S5161X

When you're laptop-shopping, sometimes it seems as though the virtual shelves have been filled with machines zapped there by a duplicator ray. And this is especially true when you're browsing through the well-stocked aisles of mainstream notebooks...

Above-average battery life ; Good performance for price ; Nice selection of preinstalled software

Overly glossy keyboard ; Too-small space bar ; Mediocre Webcam ; Lackluster design

This Satellite has a dull design, but its above-average battery life and performance make it a good 15.6-inch laptop option for its $699 price.

Consumer review by:

It just simply works.

Nice choice for a little word processing, a little spread sheet, a little internet, a little photo/music management, and a little price tag.

Had this for about a year and haven't experience any problems...just a nice, basic laptop. Doesn't weigh a ton. Adequate screen size. Not a performance screamer with a lot of features, but it only cost about $500 and it just works
