Toshiba releases business-minded Tecra A8 laptop

Toshiba has gone a bit "lappy happy" this week, announcing yet another 15.4-inch machine to join the two new notebooks and nine new configurations of current models that we spotted earlier. This time around, the company is targeting corporate IT buyers...

Review: Toshiba Tecra A8-EZ8511

On Toshiba's website, this notebook is listed in the “Basic” category, which describes the Tecra A8 to a pun-intended “T.” Aimed at the casual user...

Biometric fingerprint scanner for security and application shortcuts. Sleek design. Hard drive shock protection. Light weight at 6.5 lbs. Reasonable price point

Windows Vista with Aero delivers sluggish performance. No side USB ports; only 3 in the back. Speakers are tinny and fuzzy at high volume. Brightness level of the screen resets itself to the default (read: too dim) level between restarts and hibernations

Toshiba Tecra A8-EZ8512 review: Toshiba Tecra A8-EZ8512

Low price; sturdy construction; attractive matte-finish display; fingerprint reader; long warranty.

Keyboard could be bigger; weak speakers; smallish touch pad; merely average performance and battery life.

Though larger businesses might be willing to pay for a richer feature set, the Toshiba Tecra A8 is an affordable, basic laptop for individuals and small-business users.

Toshiba Tecra A8-S8314 1.83GHz Core Duo T2400, 15.4-inch

A frustrating keyboard mars the Toshiba Tecra A8-S8314, a budget business laptop with an otherwise good design.

Includes a fingerprint reader

Keyboard feels cramped

This budget business laptop includes dual pointing devices and a decent design, though the keyboard is uncomfortable.

Toshiba Tecra A8 Review

The A8 strikes me as well made and sturdy. I say this without qualification, meaning I see no significant differences in build quality between the A8 and the workstation-class M65 I normally use, but I also say it with the A8's price in mind. The...

Great value ; Very nice glossy screen ; Includes a pointing stick, as well as a touchpad ; Good build quality ; Excellent performance ; Fingerprint reader ; Multiple hardware protection features ; TPM hardware-based encryption ; Stays exceptionally cool

Some keyboard/input device issues, as noted ; Location of USB ports might prove somewhat inconvenient

Although the A8 came with quite a bit more junk software than some other business-class machines I’ve used, everything I actually wanted to use worked just fine, and XP Pro ran well too. I have no insight into the subtle interplay of notebook pricing...

Though larger businesses might be willing to pay for a richer feature set, the Toshiba Tecra A8 is an affordable, basic laptop for individuals and small-business users.

Low price ; Sturdy construction ; Attractive matte-finish display ; Fingerprint reader ; Long warranty

Keyboard could be bigger ; Weak speakers ; Smallish touch pad ; Merely average performance and battery life

Support Toshiba backs the Tecra A8 with an industry-standard one-year warranty; with options to extend the warranty to three years of on-site next business day service for an additional fee. Support is accessible through a 24/7 toll-free phone line,...

Great Value

Would highly recommend this laptop to anyone.

Solid laptop. No issues with the performance of this laptop. NewEgg/Toshiba is one of the few places left where you can still get Win XP Pro OS

Not sure about the 'safe lock'. Doesn't seem to work but who needs it
