Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II

The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II ($199.99 direct) is the standard kit lens that is bundled with APS-C Canon EOS D-SLR cameras. When you buy it along with a camera it only adds about $100 to the price, and at that price it's a bargain. If you're...

Sharp. Light. Inexpensive. Optically stabilized

Noticeable distortion. Front element rotates during focus. Plastic lens mount. Slow aperture

The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II is the standard kit lens for Canon EOS cameras. It's not the best built lens in the world, but is quite sharp.

Beginners will have a good time playing with this lens, until they'll start craving for a lens with a bigger maximum aperture.

Good sharpness, accurate autofocus

The front element extends and rotates when focusing, and thus making the lens unsuitable for use with filters. It is entirely made of plastics, and looks fragile. Narrow maximum aperture, and variable across the focal length range

I've read lately that it compares with the ten times more expensive Canon EFS 17-55 IS, that they are equal in IQ . That said I'd swap it with you for that or an L lens!

Sharper than the Canon 17-40/4 L handheld because of the IS, in fact it beats all Canon wide lenses because of this. Load up with two of them in case one breaks though they're sturdier than they feel and look. The plastic mount doesn't matter - because...

It doesn't look or feel professional, that's all

Unbeatable optics for the price. But why don't they offer the same lens with quality materialslike the EFS 55-250mm which is also inexpensive ?

I make razor sharp pictures with no chromatic abberation

The plastic feels very very cheap.Spherical aberration is very noticeable

The perfect kit lens for beginners, a battle tool without losing quality in the results

It worths the price, a good starting lens. Sharp, lightweight, stabilized, relatively compact

plastic made, no focus distance scale, rotating and extending front. The overall build quality is really frustrating. Slow in focus and really noisy

One of the best value for money, and a must have for beginners.

It's really cheap, and very sharp if you know to use it, it focus really near giving good close ups and have IS

It's slow and plastic made
