Outstanding sharpness across the frame from maximum aperture ; Excellent build quality ; Relatively lightweight ; Reasonably low distortion ; Low CA ; Image stabilisation ; Fast autofocus ; Dust and moisture resistance

Distortion is wavy at 16mm ; Far corners remain darker than the image centre, even when stopped down to f/16

Canon EF 16-35 mm f/4L IS USM

The Canon company haven't had much luck with ultra-wide angle lenses. The EF 17–40 f/4.0L USM, an already elderly model, has one saving grace – a good price for an L-series instrument- but its optical properties could be hardly called outstanding.

solid casing and high build quality ; excellent image quality in the frame centre ; very good image quality on the edge of the APS-C sensor ; acceptable resolution on the edge of the full frame ; imperceptible longitudinal chromatic aberration ; low...

very high vignetting level on full frame ; weak performance against bright light ; distortion level at 16 mm on full frame could have been lower

This is a very good lens. It has a useful IS system that allows handholding for long exposures, and less vignetting and quality fall-off at the edges than expected. If the ability to handhold your camera is more important than achieving a shallow depth...

I have had the 17-40mm, the 16-35mm, 16-35mm f/2.8 II and then this one. When I saw the MTF charts, I made a leap of faith and sold my 16-35mm f/2.8 II. AND i do not regret it.

Sharpness center to corner, image quality, color, Stabilization

f4 (f2.8 is always handy)
