Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM

The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM is a very compact telezoom for full-frame Canon SLRs, but its image quality is lacking.

Compact. Optically stabilized. Full-frame coverage

Pricey. Not that sharp. Lots of distortion when zoomed

The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM ($1,399) is quite compact when you consider its zoom range and compatibility with full-frame cameras. Its DO designation refers to a design that incorporates diffractive optics, which helps keep the size down,...

Canon EF 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 DO IS USM lens test

Here are the MTF JPG summary Tommy Lee , June 24, 2004; 03:47 A.M.

As a long-term user of a Canon 75-300 IS USM lens I hoped that Canon wouldbring out an L-series version of this lens with better optical quality, especially at the 300mm end. When Canon introduced the 100-400 IS lens I boughtone to get higher quality...

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM

A compact telephoto zoom lens covering the popular 70-300mm range, which has a diffractive optical element, Image Stabiliser and Ultrasonic focus motor.

Good resolution; Excellent build quality; Compact size; Low distortion

Less contrast when shooting into the light

REVIEW: Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM

Gary Wolstenholme takes a close look at the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM lens before using it to take a close look at everything else.

Good resolution; Excellent build quality; Compact size; Low distortion

Price; Zoom creep; Less contrast when shooting into the light

If money were no object and you wanted a compact telephoto zoom lens with an image stabiliser that produces sharp images at all focal lengths, then this would be the lens for you.

Good telephoto lens.

The lens takes good usable prints about 90% of the time. The L series lenses are clearer but barely. A professional photographer I was read said that the photographer takes the picture, more expensive gear won't make the pics any better!

Price, it is black NOT white, clarity

Front of lens moves during focus

Great lens for the money!!!

I reluctantly sold my 70-200 2.8L that I used to shoot my daughters college basketball games. I no longer felt that I needed the constant 2.8. With this lens I gained 100mm (160 on my 7d) , image stabilization, and put an additional $700 in my pocket....

Fun with Photos

We went to the Morton Arboretum near Chicago and "played" with the new lens. We are thrilled with it. First time out and we can\'t be happier, except for the weight and our own inexperience, the lens performed admirably. We also want to say that it is...

Product Specifications

The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM telephoto zoom lens has been developed to meet the high-performance standards that today's photographers demand. Improved Image Stabilizer Technology provides up to three stops of "shake" correction, and the "Mode 2" option stabilizes images while panning with a moving subject. Compared to the original Canon EF 75-300mm IS zoom lens, this telephoto lens has faster autofocus, and overall the lens is lighter and has a smaller diameter than the original. The zoom ring can be locked at the 70mm position, making this powerful lens easy to transport, too.
