REVIEW: Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR II Lens

This 11.1x super-zoom lens for Nikon DX format SLRs costs around £590, sports silent internal focusing and Vibration Reduction II, which promises to allow hand-held shots to be taken at shutters speeds up to four stops slower than would be possible...

Excellent sharpness at 18mm; Effective VR II system; Zoom lock switch prevents the lens from extending in transport; Fast AF for a super-zoom; Decent build quality

Compromised quality at longer focal lengths compared to shorter zooms; Zoom creep beyond 35mm

The first lens covering this range from Nikon was immensely popular, and with this new version, the issue with zoom creep and the lens extending during transport has been addressed. The addition of Nikon's latest VR II vibration reduction system is...

Excellent lens

This is my favorite lens, I am considering buying the Nikon 24-120mm because of the nano crystal. I use this lens for almost everything. I took it with me to Costa Rica, I got some amazing images.

Quality of photos taken with this lens are excellent. Also has powerful Zoom. This is an all purpose single lens that reduces the hassle of changing lenses according to the situation.

Versatility in a Tube

I bought a D3300 DSLR, and while I found the 18-55mm kit lens to be great in its own respect, I needed to get some glass which would be a bit more versatile for what I typically shoot, which is our beautiful mountains of Northern California. The...

Great lens for a great camera

I bought this lens when I upgraded from a D90 to the D800 a few months ago. I had been using the 70-300 lens on my D90, and loved it. I researched a lot before buying this lens, and had some concerns about distortion, but decided to buy it for the...

Lens creep

I found a easy solution that has worked for years. I took a 2'' elastic strip found at a sewing counter and made a band around the lens, just snug enough to allow manual turning, but will not let the lens creep. Easily removed, but I keep it on all of...

Do-able. I guess, it gets the job done.

Takes very good pictures compare to some higher end models of other brands. Video quality is a BIG NO NO. The video quality is too choppy and not very smooth when compared to other brand. Not recommending this camera because there are two newer model.

Defective product

I have just returned my new 28-300mm f3.5-5.6G ED VR for a refund. My experience was so disappointing I asked for a refund rather than a replacement while I reconsider any further investment in Nikon. When the lens arrived I very carefully attempted to...

Product Specifications

Designed for exclusive use with PENTAX KAF-mount digital SLR cameras, the new lens offers 4X zoom coverage in the telephoto range. Further, the lens features an angle of view from 31.5 degrees to 8.1 degrees (equivalent in focal length from 76.5mm to 306mm in the 35mm format). As with all DA-Series lenses, this DA 50mm-200mm features a responsive "Quick-Shift Focus System" that allows photographers to instantly switch the focus mode from auto to manual with a slight twist of the focus ring. Coupled with a simple, functional design and the elimination of an aperture ring, this new mechanism considerably improves operability. The lens also incorporates an Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass lens element and two aspherical lens elements for true-to-life image reproduction and overall size reduction. The image circle in DA-series lenses is designed to perfectly match the 23.5mm x 15.7mm size of the CCD used in PENTAX digital SLRs to optimize camera performance. The new design also contributes to a drastic reduction in size, weight and production cost, compared to 35mm-format counterparts with similar specifications.
