REVIEW: Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR II Lens

This 11.1x super-zoom lens for Nikon DX format SLRs costs around £590, sports silent internal focusing and Vibration Reduction II, which promises to allow hand-held shots to be taken at shutters speeds up to four stops slower than would be possible...

Excellent sharpness at 18mm; Effective VR II system; Zoom lock switch prevents the lens from extending in transport; Fast AF for a super-zoom; Decent build quality

Compromised quality at longer focal lengths compared to shorter zooms; Zoom creep beyond 35mm

The first lens covering this range from Nikon was immensely popular, and with this new version, the issue with zoom creep and the lens extending during transport has been addressed. The addition of Nikon's latest VR II vibration reduction system is...

Great lens for the price!

Purchased this lens after dropping the standard 18-55. The VR function adds so much to this lens! Hate that I had to spend the money to replace a lens but did open the opportunity to upgrade to the VR.

A lot of performance in a litte package

This lens simply helps to produce sharp, clear images in a variety of light situations. The VR capability allows one to take hand-held pictures in low light conditions, which is fantastic. While the range of the zoom is not exceptional, it does provide...

Amazing Lens

How does this lens not have 200 TIPA awards, 200 EISA awards, etc.? It's simply THE BEST in its category. I use it 90% of the time on my D800. The build quality, and most importantly the image quality is superb.

Another Must Have!!!!

I wouldn't even think about shooting an event without this lens. It is one of three lenses I must have for my wedding shoots. It is just unbelievably great. Before I could afford this lens I rented it to do several shoots because it wasn't the same...

Great Range/Fun to use

Please see my reviews of the 12-24mm and the 70-200mm for context. I go back and forth between my choice of 'always on' lens -- it is usually this one but it might be the 12-24mm or the 50mm 1.4D.

I love this lens.

I have been using this lens for about a month and find it to be great. I've had to do a little reading to learn how to focus with this lens but I'm learning quickly and am delighted with my photos. They are very sharp - even on shots that are at the...

Product Specifications

Designed for exclusive use with PENTAX KAF-mount digital SLR cameras, the new lens offers 4X zoom coverage in the telephoto range. Further, the lens features an angle of view from 31.5 degrees to 8.1 degrees (equivalent in focal length from 76.5mm to 306mm in the 35mm format). As with all DA-Series lenses, this DA 50mm-200mm features a responsive "Quick-Shift Focus System" that allows photographers to instantly switch the focus mode from auto to manual with a slight twist of the focus ring. Coupled with a simple, functional design and the elimination of an aperture ring, this new mechanism considerably improves operability. The lens also incorporates an Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass lens element and two aspherical lens elements for true-to-life image reproduction and overall size reduction. The image circle in DA-series lenses is designed to perfectly match the 23.5mm x 15.7mm size of the CCD used in PENTAX digital SLRs to optimize camera performance. The new design also contributes to a drastic reduction in size, weight and production cost, compared to 35mm-format counterparts with similar specifications.
