Lens Test: Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G DX ED VR AS-S

Nikon's longest zoom for cameras with APS-C-size sensors (DX format), this 5.5X 55–300mm f/4.5–5.6G VR ($360, street) scales up to the full-frame equivalent of 82.5–450mm. It offers two elements of ED glass, a high-refractive-index glass element (a DX...

Lens Review: Nikon 55-200mm F/4-5.6G AF-S VR DX IF-ED

Also, like the Canon, this Nikon lens lacks a focus distance scale. On this lens the manual focus ring looks almost like an afterthought tacked on to the front end of the lens.

Here's a deal: An upgrade of Nikon's original digital-only tele kit zoom, this new 55-200mm f/4-5.6 ($250, street) adds Vibration Reduction and a number of optical improvements for only $70 more. A 3.6X 82-300mm equivalent zoom, it's not expected to...

Nikkor AF-S DX VR 55-200mm f/4-5.6 G ED

The Nikkor DX 55-200mm VR is an entry-level telephoto zoom for DX-format Nikon DSLRs. Launched alongside the Nikon D40x in March 2007, it's designed to complement the standard DX 18-55mm kit lens and extend the maximum equivalent coverage from 83 to...

Great value telephoto zoom ; Effective VR anti-shake facilities ; Fast and quiet SWM focusing ; Perfectly complements DX 18-55mm lens

Softness and fringing in corners at 200mm ; Build quality is fairly basic ; Basic manual focusing facilities ; Range less compelling for other kit lenses ; Scores ; (relative to other Nikkor zooms) ; Build quality ; Optical quality ; Specification ; Value

So while we’re very impressed by the Nikkor DX 55-200mm VR, it makes the most sense when complementing the DX 18-55mm kit lens. If you have a different kit lens, there’s more appropriate models to complement or replace it, but if you do own the DX...

Nikon AF-S DX VR 55-200mm f4-5.6 G IF-ED

A good ‘second’ lens for anyone with a Nikon D40, D40x or D80, but the older non-VR 55-200 is smaller, cheaper and optically better

Product Specifications

High-power 4.3x Telephoto Zoom-Nikkor lens (Approximates the picture angle performance of a 105-450mm lens on 35mm SLR). Vibration Reduction (VRII) minimizes the effects of camera shake allowing photographers to shoot handheld at as many as 4 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper images. When used on Nikon DX format DSLR Two Nikon Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements deliver superior optical performance for both digital and 35mm photography. ED glass minimizes chromatic aberrations, contributing to superb contrast and resolution performance. Internal Focus (IF) provides fast and quiet auto focusing without changing the length of the lens, retaining subject-working distance through the focus range. Focus as close as 4.9 ft throughout entire zoom range. Non-Rotating front element provides for convenient use of circular polarizing filters and the Nikon Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System. A Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables fast and quiet autofocusing, along with quick switching between autofocus and manual operation (M/A and M). A nine-blade rounded diaphragm opening, out-of-focus elements appear more natural.
