a reference, if you have the use/need of such lens it's a no brainer. however some other options available on the market may be better deals.

lightning fast AF, contrasty as fuck, weather proof, sharp in the center at every aperture, bokeh good for a zoom lens, built like a tank

too long, heavy, expensive unless you buy a used one, corner sharpness, chromatic abberations

for 800 Euros brand new I wouldn't mind the imperfections. for 1000 euros... It stinks

nice weight and size, very useful range, perfect all purpose/travel lens with average-good optical qualities

too expensive for what it does, AF a bit too slow, sharpness falling at 85-120mm

Field curvature makes it useless at 36mp on a d800 for shooting flat subjects which might fill the frame, like a building , both ends wiil look unsharp related to the tack sharp centre area, but very good in dx mode.but then what´s the point?one can...

AF- really fastvery sharp at centre frameexcellent build qual

price,no VRfield curvature kills the border resolution,(not much of a problem with DX cams)

Get a fast 50 or 35 to compliment this lens for mobility and low light work. Otherwise a pretty good kit zoom, that can handle the greater part of every photographers needs. VR would have been nice though.

Fast AF, built to last, nice bokeh. Sharp for a zoom

Size, weight and price. Not the best match for DX. No VR

A good useful and versatile lens. Would be great just a little longer - eg 80mm. Good wedding or general product lens, although watch the wide distortion. Great build and nice to use.

sharp throughout and still good at f16close focusversatile

distortion when widebulk especially with hood onweightnot the best subject separation at wide aperture

good all around walking lens

very good image quality, autofocus is quick, VRII is excellent making it possible to shoot in low light conditions, fixed f4 aperture

distortion when shooting wide specially at 24mm although correctible

if you buy one, you will not be disappointed.

Excellent sharpness & clarity. Superb, Fast Auto Focus.Oozes Quality. Gives the neck muscles a decent work-out if used for extended period of time

Big & Heavy, a little pricey too, but you get what you pay for

Not the worst lens for portraits, but it wouldn't be my first choice. Also, usable as a walk around lens, but again, not my first choice. Still though, if you're going to buy a 2.8, of the holy trinity this would be my first.

The optical quality is great, with that fixed 2.8, it's just the right amount of reach for event photography

It is a bit heavy, especially for a walk around lens

My go-to lens, lives on the D700. During shoots I'll use my 70-200VRII, 85 1.4G, 50 1.4G, 14-24 2.8, 35 1.4 - it's always the 24-70 that brings home the highest percentage of money shots. One big reason is the close minimum focus distance - you can end...

Just about everything - sharpness, colour, fast accurate AF, bokeh, the list goes on

Big and heavy, light transmission not quite as good as primes, some distortion at wide end
