Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED AF-S DX Nikkor Review Round-Up

The Nikkor AF-S 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED DX delivered a more convincing performance compared to its kit companion (18-55mm DX). The resolution is very high throughout the zoom range (best at 55mm) and there's only a slight decrease in contrast at large...

Nikon's DX format telephoto zoom benefits from vibration reduction...

Vibration Reduction, price, mid-focal length performance

Plastic mount, resolution at 200mm

As a long zoom to complement the kit lens supplied with Nikon's D40 and D40x - and maybe even the D80 - there's no doubt the 55-200mm VR fits the bill. Its light weight won't unbalance the camera, the price won't break the bank and the Vibration...

Not much

Really a budget or starter lens, reasonably priced, but lacking the fast maximum aperture and expensive glass of more professional lenses

Nikon AF-S DX 55-200 f/4-5.6 G ED

Available in both black and silver, this lens is Nikon's offering in the popular 'first extra lens' category of 55-200mm, a handy length as it starts where most standard zooms finish. We take a look at how this one performs.

Smallest and lightest in class; Good performance in centre.; Usable manual focus ring; Good value for money

Edge performance not as good as the centre

REVIEW: Nikon AF-S DX 55-200 f/4-5.6 G ED

Available in both black and silver, this lens is Nikon's offering in the popular ‘first extra lens' category of 55-200mm, a handy length as it starts where most standard zooms finish. We take a look at how this one performs.

Smallest and lightest in class; Good performance in centre.; Usable manual focus ring; Good value for money

Pincushion distortion at the long end.; Edge performance not as good as the centre

Despite its lightweight construction this lens does not have a ‘cheap' feel to it and the overall performance, although not stunning, is certainly not in the milk-bottle category. The autofocus performed satisfactorily and the manual mode proved...

Excellent all around zoom lens

Great lens!

I got this lens as a kit with my D3100 W/ the 18-55mm. Saved like $150.00

I didn't realize how much I would be using this lens! Takes nice crisp photos of the moon. A must when going to places like the zoo. I recommend a first time DSLR buyer to get this lens along with the 18-55mm kit lens
