Nikon Nikkor AF-S Micro 105 mm f/2.8G IF-ED VR

Extremely sharp and no discernible distortion. I use this lens on a Nikon D800E for extreme high res pan's (mural prints up to 7.2M x 2.4M from multi Gb files and incredible resolution). I also use it in conjunction with a backlit flash slide copier...

Good value for money; very versatile

Very sharp; very good macro lens until 1:1; good build quality; very good for portraits

AF hunts very often, sometimes I need to switch it off altogether.Though it is very sharp, it is not "State of the Art" anymore. Correction of colour errors could be better

(on a D800) With VR and fast autofocus this is a very good choice for macro and medium telephoto work in the field. In a macro setup in a studio these advantages are irrelevant and all you want is good optics. If you want to do high resolution macro...

(on a D800) Sharp at f2.8, very sharp when stopping down. Very fast autofocus, 1:1 macro, relatively low lateral CA. Sealed

(on a D800) High longitudinal/axial CA wide open that never really go away and may be noticed as purple/green fringing even at f8. "Paradoxical" behavior of CA when stopping down: axial CA gets better, lateral CA gets worse. Bulky and heavy, this is...

Good lens for the money, but for serious macro work there are better choices.

Stellar sharpness, amazingly fast AF, weather-sealing

Bulky. Too fat for this focal range. Even if you have huge hands, it is too big to hold comfortably.Very weak performance against direct light, also delivers nasty yellow cast, which is very difficult to correct at the stage of editing. VR affects IQ,...

I use the 60, 105 and 200 macros regularly. Which I choose is based on desired perspective, working distance requirements and what I'm willing to carry. If you want to get into macro, you can't find a better place to start.

Stellar optics, VR, excellent AF (not near 1:1, but useful when shooting close-ups in difficult situations) and excellent build quality. The most useful focal length for flowers, while still usable for bugs. It takes the TC1.4 very well too and at...

Bulky - too fat. Has never appealed to me for portraits. It just doesn't seem to flatter people the way the old 105/2.5 AIS or the fast 85mm's do

I mostly use this lens for telephoto range, nevertheless sometimes find usefull micro capability. I had 70-200mm which was too heavy for extensive use so I sold it and got 105VR which I find as ideal compromise of weight and range. Definetely a lens...

Weather sealed, just the right weight (nicely balanced with D300s), effective hood, my copy sharp from largest aperature, VR effective in telephoto range, build quality

VR only ON or OFF

I feel that this lens is more of a multi purpose short tele rather than a dedicated macro lens. It is useful for landscape, product shots, macro, portraits. VR doesn't work at macro distances (not the lens fault).

VR works for portraits (longer distances).Smooth bokeh.Great build.Slient, fast and accurate AF.Front elements does not extrude when you focus down to 1:1, fully IF, unlike Tamron 90 which extrudes so much

Lacks contrast and sharpness a F2.8, performs best once stopped down a little.High price

Glad I bought it, my next purchase will be AFS 200 f4 when it finally comes out. Possibly the 200 f2.

Very nice build

Personally I think it's only usable at F4 or smaller @ 2.8 too soft for me ( i'm the ultimate pixel peeper though ). Heavy

Be aware of its CRC construction, which makes this lens 2.8 lens starting ad 3 meters focus. Closer to that it gets 3.5. (who cares , since macro is usually shoot @f16 and more) If you shoot macro get it. If you shoot macro occasionally, borrow it, try...

Sharp, sharp, SHARRRRRRP! AF limited mode makes it a speed demon. Beautyfull colors. Did I already mentioned it is a sharp lens?Perfectly usable starting from 2.8

It is perfect. No cons... except it is highly specialized lens. Unless you are total macro addicted freak, there are better ways to spend $1k for lenses. One friendly pro, told me after few weeks of trying this lens, it is too sharp to shoot portraits :-)
