Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 12-60mm 1:2.8-4.0 SWD Lens Review

The Digital Zuiko ED 12-60mm 1:2.8-4.0 SWD is Olympus's latest upmarket standard zoom, announced to accompany its E-3 flagship DSLR in October 2007. Firmly placed in what Olympus refers to as its 'Pro' lens lineup, this lens offers a near-ideal focal...

Very useful wideangle to telephoto range ; Superb optics ; Excellent build quality, dust and splash-proof ; Impressive resistance to flare ; Decent macro performance

Pronounced and complex distortion at wideangle ; Slightly sub-par lens hood ; Shadowing of built-in flash at wideangle on smaller bodies ; Expensive

Olympus were in a unique position when entering the digital SLR market; with no legacy 35mm autofocus mount, they were free (or depending upon your point of view, forced) to design a whole new system from scratch. Their chosen solution was to use a...

This zoom lens is part of the FourThirds system, and therefore gives a film-equivalent focal length range of 24-120mm. With its fast aperture of f/2.8-4, it's suitable for use in all lighting conditions, and the SWD technology provides enhanced...

Olympus Zuiko Digital 14-54 mm f/2.8-3.5

When it comes to all-purpose lenses the Four Thirds system offers a really interesting selection indeed. In our tests we have had so far: the cheapest “kit” with the 14-42 mm range and an expensive 12-60 mm model equipped with an SWD motor. We also...

Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 12-60 mm f/2.8-4.0 SWD

At the beginning of March 2007 the Olympus company announced the launch of four new Zuiko lenses. Among them was the Zuiko Digital ED 12-60 mm f/2.8-4.0 SWD model – a lens unique in more than one way.

very solid barrel ; sensible dimensions when you take into account its wide focal lengths range, good fastness, weather-sealing and the presence of an SWD motor ; outstanding or very good image quality in the frame centre at all focal lengths and...

Olympus Zuiko Digital 14-54mm f/2.8-3.5

The solid build quality of this 14-54mm zoom, coupled with its relatively wide f/2.8 maximum aperture, mark it out as a lens intended for serious use...

Stunning resolution for a standard zoom

Slight chromatic aberration

Overall, this is a great lens that offers both a wide zoom range and excellent resolution. Though there are a few niggles, the 14-54mm f/2.8-3.5 is likely to impress heavyweight users with both its on-paper specification and its real-world capabilities.

The review lens was assessed on the Olympus E-3 body, which it complemented very well. It could be equally at home on the lighter E-410 and E-510 models. Both the focusing and zoom rings moved smoothly and positively and showed no tendency to 'creep'...

Pricey, but worth it

I bought this to replace my 14-54 because I wanted a wider lens with more reach. It was the only lens I took on an 18 day European trip and never missed any of my other lenses. If I could only have one lens, this would be it, without any doubt!

Excellent focal range, pretty fast (light), fast focus (especially on the E-3 or E-30)

Price, but it's worth it

I planned to use this lens for photographing indoor live performances by musical groups. It works beautifully for that. The f2.8 lets me use higher shutter speeds and/or lower ISO for better results than I was getting. I also use it for some wildlife...
