Sony 50mm F1.4 Lens Review

The Sony 50mm F1.4 is the company's current offering in the classic 'fast standard' category, and was introduced at the genesis of the Alpha system in July 2006. Of course its origins go back well before then; this lens is essentially a reworking of...

Unusually good performance on APS-C even at wide apertures ; Excellent image quality when stopped down on both full-frame and APS-C ; Low distortion

Very soft across most of the frame at wide apertures on full frame ; Bokeh chromatic aberration, most visible at wide apertures ; Vignetting at wide apertures on full frame (essentially disappears by F3.3) ; Corner softness on full-frame - never quite...

Having reviewed four other 50mm F1.4 lenses of similar design over the past few months, we weren't expecting any major surprises from the Sony version. And in broad terms it's not hugely different from its Canon, Nikon and Pentax equivalents; as befits...

Sony 50mm f/2.8 Macro lens

The Sony 50mm f/2.8 Macro lens is a compact macro-focus lens that covers the full range from life-size to infinity. "Life size" macro imaging means that the image you capture is the same size as the subject in reality, giving you spectacularly sharp...

Sony 50 mm f/2.8 Macro

A classic fixed focal 50 mm lens is quite a simple optical construction, usually consisting of 5-6 elements. In the case of the1.7/50 model, produced by Minolta, it used to be 6 elements in 5 groups. Unfortunately, the Sony company haven't decided yet...

very good image quality starting up from the maximum relative aperture ; negligible distortion ; well-corrected coma and astigmatism ; exemplary work against bright light ; correct work of autofocus ; good quality of barrel

a bit too high vignetting by f/2.8 ; chromatic aberration at the maximum relative aperture could have been lower

Sony 50mm f/1.4 review

What this budget prime might lack in acronyms is more than made up for in overall image quality as this WDC review of the Sony 50mm f/1.4 lens discovers.

Great real-world results

AF is noisy and non-IF

Ignore the lack of acronyms and look at its performance instead: Sony's f/1.4 has some weaknesses but elsewhere it's a real cracker.

Sony 50mm f/2.8 macro

The Sony 50mm f/2.8 macro is a further survivor from the Minolta era. Naturally it has been redesigned to match the look and feel of Sony Alpha lens series but under the skin little if anything has changed. It it, obviously, a full format lens which...

The Sony 50mm f/2.8 macro is certainly a very good lens but it does not really stand out from the crowd - macro lenses simply tend to be top performers. The resolution potential of the lens is very high straight from f/2.8. The vignetting is usually...

Sony 50mm f/1.4

The Sony 50mm f/1.4 is currently the only standard lens available in Sony Alpha mount. Mostlikely it is not a new lens but simply the relabeled variant of the old Minolta AF 50mm f/1.4 RS plusADI encoding. On an APS-C DSLR its focal length is equivalent...

The Sony 50mm f/1.4 is a typical representative of the standard lenses that were designed back inthe 70s to 80s. The max. aperture (f/1.4) should be generally avoided due to weak contrast, poor borders and a significant amount of longitudinal chromatic...

Sony 50mm f/1.4 AF

The Sony 50mm f/1.4 AF portrait lens is a very compact and solid feeling piece of kit with a metal lens mount for extra durability.

Sony 50mm f/2.8 D Macro

Coupled to a Sony full-frame D-SLR such as the a850 or a900, the Sony 50mm f/2.8 D Macro is a true 50mm lens in 35mm terms and turns into a 75mm lens when used with a Sony APS-C sensor D-SLR with 1.5x crop factor.

Sony 50mm f/2.8 Macro

Sony's 50mm Macro lens is fairly squat and compact with a simple design.
