Sony DT 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 SAM

Good JPEG output at base ISO (but sometimes poor low contrast detail, improves visibly when shooting in RAW) ; Good JPEG resolution ; Reliable metering ; Fastest AF in live view (but see disadvantages below) ; Coherent ergonomics for live view...

Visible blurring of fine detail in JPEGs from ISO 200 upwards ; High ISO performance not on the same level as direct competitors ; Smallest viewfinder of any APS-C DSLR ; Protruding screen obstructs use of viewfinder, especially if you're wearing...

Aside from its unique high-speed live view mode the Alpha 380 simply can't compete with the best of its peers in this fiercely competitive sector. Handling isn't great, nor is low light performance, and unless you find one very cheap indeed, it's best...

Sony 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 DT SAM SAL-1855 Review

For a kit lens, the Sony performs quite well - sharp wide open at 18mm, reaching its best performance when stopped down to ƒ/5.6 or ƒ/8. It's a definite improvement over the previous kit lens, the 18-70mm ƒ/3.5-5.6 DT.

Sony 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM DT - Review / Lab Test

Typical for the new generation of kit zooms, there are no severe resolution issues. This may be a surprising news for some but it is simply easy to design such slow-speed 3x zoom lenses. So optically there's really little to complain about - the lens...

Sony DT 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM

Kit lenses have had a bad press over the past few years. Can this one buck the trend? Here we'll take a look.

Good resolution performance; Good control of CA; Compact and lightweight

Can be prone to flare

REVIEW: Sony DT 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM

Replacing Sony's 18-70mm as the standard kit lens bundled with their digital SLRs, the 18-55mm was released as a better quality replacement that is also more compact and lightweight. If you were to buy one on its own, as a replacement or an upgrade, it...

Good resolution performance; Good control of CA; Compact and lightweight

Rotating front element; Barrel distortion at 18mm; Can be prone to flare

Kit lenses are usually nothing special, but this lens has proved itself a very capable performer during testing, especially in the areas of resolution and control of colour aberrations.

Sony 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 DT SAM SAL-1855 review by Steve07

Did receive it in the 2 lens package and did not had good expectations. But it deserves a closer look and respect for sharpness and colours. Very satisfied with optical performance. Reasons to change only because of zoom range and better aperture...

small, lightweight, sharp, nice colours

no hood included, limited zoom range

Sony 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 DT SAM SAL-1855 review by Beachrider

Purchased used. IQ for the price is quite good. Colors are well above average. Zoom range and max-aperature are limited due to price-point. SAM is compatible with contrast-mode focusing on 2010+ cameras, in-camera focus is not.

Small, light and optically stronger than 18-70 that preceded it

Plastic lens mount, limited zoom range, SAM quieter than in-camera AF, noiser than SSM/HSM/USM
