Apple TV 4K review

The Apple TV 4K will be a boon to Apple power users, but pretty much anyone else will be better off with a Roku Ultra instead.

Extremely intuitive interface ; Siri search/control is vastly improved ; Powerful graphics and processing ; Beautiful 4K HDR picture

Slightly dim SDR content in some cases ; Converts 24p film content to 60Hz ; Expensive compared to competition

The Apple TV 4K is a zippy, slick device with Apple’s unique design stamp all over it. Those deeply embedded in the Apple universe will be tickled with the way the streaming set-top box integrates with other Apple Devices and with Siri integration that...

Apple TV 4K review

Now that it finally includes an app for Amazon video , Apple's 4K streaming box is the hands-down best product of its kind. But you should only buy one if you want a premium experience and are willing to pay for it.

The Apple TV 4K delivers the best streaming video available to compatible 4K, HDR and Dolby Vision TVs. It offers the most polished streaming experience today, the best remote on the market and excellent Siri voice options. It's just $30, £30 or AU$40...

The Apple TV 4K is expensive. It doesn't stream YouTube in 4K or offer Dolby Atmos audio. Cheaper streaming devices from Roku and others offer similar image quality and capabilities, as well as more 4K apps.

If you can swing the price and want the best streamer available today, get the Apple TV 4K.

Apple TV 4K review: The high price of polish

The Apple TV 4K gets the little details right, but it's more than twice the price of other 4K HDR streaming devices.

Fast, fluid interface with best-in-breed apps ; Siri is as smart as it gets for TV search ; No ads larding up the home screen ; Can serve as a HomeKit smart-home hub

Far more expensive than other 4K HDR streamers ; No 4K HDR for YouTube and no Amazon Video (yet) ; The Siri Remote is still too easy to lose in the couch

The Apple TV’s software hasn’t changed much with the new hardware, in that it still requires users to make a philosophical choice between apps and content.

Apple TV 4K review: Almost perfect

The Apple TV 4K packs in almost everything the last model was missing, and its push towards making 4K releases cheaper is noble. But there aren't many third-party apps supporting the new format at launch, and Apple also made some curious decisions that...

4K/HDR content looks great ; Aggressive pricing for 4K/HDR films ; Wide variety of apps

Needs more third-party 4K/HDR support ; Video processing goes overboard ; No Dolby Atmos

The Apple TV 4K does everything you'd expect it to do -- what's surprising is how Apple is undercutting the competition in 4K pricing. In a world where people are buying fewer films, and the current best physical media format might not be sticking...

Apple TV 4K

It's been a long time coming, but Apple has finally made the move to 4K HDR video streaming. The wait for Apple TV 4K was worth it, especially for those living exclusively in the iOS ecosystem.

4K and HDR support for both HDR10 and Dolby Vision. Strong Wi-Fi performance. Siri with voice remote.

Expensive. Apple's streaming apps selection is still relatively small. Some apps not yet updated for 4K streaming.

Bottom Line: It's been a long time coming, but Apple has finally made the move to 4K HDR video streaming. The wait for Apple TV 4K was worth it, especially for those living exclusively in the iOS ecosystem.

Apple TV 4K review: so close, so far

I want to love the Apple TV 4K. I want to love it a lot. But because it's so ambitious, it's also the farthest away from the vision it's trying to achieve.

I am very confident Apple is going to figure this TV thing out. It’s the only company that has the combination of power and care to actually do it. But the Apple TV 4K’s unrealized potential just makes it obvious that the future of TV is still pretty...

Apple TV 4K Review: One Powerful (But Pricey) Streaming Box

In "Through the Looking-Glass and what Alice Found There" by Lewis Carroll, the Red Queen says to Alice, " Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do to keep in the same place." Apple has run very fast indeed to address some of the biggest...

Fantastic 4K HDR content ; Intuitive home screen ; Simple iOS and macOS integration

Expensive ; Fiddly remote ; No digital audio or USB ports

The Apple TV 4K offers an attractive, customizable interface and affordable UHD content, but design flaws and a subpar remote hold it back.

Apple TV 4K review

Recent updates have turned the Apple TV 4K into the best video streamer you can currently buy.

Substantial library of 4K HDR content ; Small, silent box ; Nice UI ; Useful voice control ; Strong picture and sound ; Almost every app you could ask for

Lack of some advanced audio formats ; All 4 still missing ; Universal search isn't quite universal

The gateway to on-demand 4K HDR movies you've been waiting for, now with extra apps and features

Apple TV 4K review: The £179 media streamer, now with Amazon Video

Apple TV 4K may be entering the market late but it brings with it a host of features and will upgrade your HD content to 4K for free

Good support for 4K HDR content ; Siri voice search is brilliant ; No need to re-purchase existing iTunes HD content in 4K

Quite pricey ; Streaming service support is patchy

Later this year, the Apple TV app is due to come to the UK which will open up its capabilities further; putting more controls on the phone and making the whole experience seamless (or at least that’s the promise). Plus, with the upcoming launch of...
