Sony SMP-N100

Affordable streaming box that includes Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon VOD, Pandora, and Slacker apps; built-in Wi-Fi; plays your own media files via DLNA network streaming or USB; supports TV with analog video connections; controllable by iPhone app.

User interface needs work; initial setup doesn't handle Wi-Fi; lacks advanced Netflix features like search and browsing categories; slightly more expensive than competitors.

Sony's SMP-N100 streaming-video box isn't the easiest to use, but it offers an unparalleled feature set at its price.

Sony SMP-N100 USB media player review: This media streamer offers with inbuilt Wi-Fi

The Sony SMP-N100 is an HD media player that can wirelessly stream content from a PC to a TV over your home network. While its price is a little on the steep side, it remains a reliable and user-friendly product.

Inbuilt Wi-Fi, impressive playback performance, user-friendly interface

No recording capabilities, uninspired design

Martin Pipe likes Sony's first standalone networkable multimedia player

Excellent picture and sound quality ; Good spread of online content

Lacks internet radio ; Some file types have to be ported in via USB port

The SMP-N100 is Sony's first dedicated IPTV and network media player. Once the exclusive province of relatively esoteric PC brands, this sector of the market is now being groomed by the big TV makers, which means a whole new tranche of telly-watchers...

Well built and appointed media player, strong IPTV selection including BBC iPlayer, YouTube and Lovefilm

Limited file support when it comes to network streaming, only really of use if you intend to feed it media files directly via front-mounted USB

The SMP-N100 takes the IPTV and media streaming capabilities of Sony's Bravia TV and Blu-ray players and bundles them into a stand alone media player; the device is ideal for owners of older Sony TVs who pine after this functionality. The unit will...

Turn your dinosaur of a TV into a multimedia-streaming, Bravia Internet Video-enabled, high-tech dream machine with this nifty set top box from Sony

Caters for any age of TV ; Nice interface ; Excellent online service

The box looks rather utilitarian ; Codec support not totally comprehensive ; Only one USB port

There's room for improvement with the N100, certainly, and you might also consider that you can get Sony Blu-ray players offering broadly similar functionality for - in the case of the Sony BDP-S480 - only around £50 more. However, if £100 is your...

Sony SMP-N100 review

Given the strength of Sony's net-friendly TVs and Blu-ray players, it's no surprise that the company's new SMP-N100 media streamer is a thoroughly equipped, well-developed little device. Dubbed the Netbox, the Sony offers more of a plug 'n' play...

Sony SMP-N100 review

The Sony SMP-N100 networked media streamer gets pretty much everything right. Its codec support could be more comprehensive, but its Internet features really shine.

Compact ; Great picture quality ; Good format support ; Breezy user interface

Only one USB port and it's not brilliantly placed

The Sony SMP-N100 is a simple and well designed media player. Its online video support is already pretty amazing but it's likely only to improve in time. While we've seen better codec support on other streamers, it's not a big problem, as most of the...
