Viewsonic VMP74 review

The VMP74 is Viewsonic's second so-called ‘full HD Network Media Player', and as the name suggests, it offers full 1080p output for video. The device itself is a small, lightweight and glossy plastic box that fits discreetly into a TV stand. It's...

The VMP74’s net connection enables features such as an RSS reader, full web browser and a range of video, radio and photo services. By the time you read this there should be a BBC iPlayer app up and running, too

The (Flash-less) web browser is pretty much unusable with the remote control: everything feels frustratingly unresponsive

Viewsonic VMP74 media streamer

Viewsonic has recently taken a bold step into the media streamer market with its VMP74 HD digital media player, a superbly slimline rival to larger and more expensive alternatives that offers a range of modern features and functionality. Despite a few...

Tidy, compact design, good format support, range of useful features and online access, reasonably priced

Buffer times can be frustrating, no built-in wireless

Despite a few relatively minor issues there’s plenty to like about the VMP74, which takes a no-nonsense approach while offering just enough in terms of flexibility and key features to be very enjoyable to use. Its slimline nature and attention to...

ViewSonic VMP74

A versatile media player that supports 1080p MKV video playback, YouTube, BBC iPlayer and internet browsing with mouse and keyboard.

Despite its titled emphasis on networking, the VMP74 doesn't offer Wi-Fi either, instead relying on an Ethernet port. However, you would have trouble streaming Full HD video files over Wi-Fi anyway, and wireless functionality can be added through a...

Viewsonic VMP74 review

ViewSonic's VMP74 isn't exactly the peak of design as far as media streamers go, but it has some unusual features, including a dual-purpose USB/eSATA port for external storage. There's also a second USB port, so you can connect external storage drives,...

Although we liked having a Flash-enabled web browser built into our media streamer, the VMP74 feels sluggish and underpowered in general.

ViewSonic VMP74 review

Although we liked having a Flash-enabled web browser built into our media streamer, the VMP74 feels sluggish and underpowered in general.

The VMP74 has some great features but it's a bit more expensive than most comparable streamers and it feels slow and underpowered. It's great to have a fully functional web browser, but the remote control is unsuitable for navigating it. We prefer the

ViewSonic Media Streamer : ViewSonic VMP74

Bringing together the various elements of your home entertainment facilities is a task that can be carried out by a media streamer unit. Acting as a centralised hub, this type of device can link together such items as a television, computer, digital...

Minor complaints aside, the ViewSonic VMP74 is a nice piece of kit with a well populated feature set. It is not a perfect solution but it is one that can carry out a number of tasks until something better comes along. Support is provided for full HD...

Viewsonic - VMP74

We've tested a wide range of media streamers at IT Reviews over the years and while there's been a handful of stand-out performers, a common failing of the also-rans is to excel in one area and ...

It's difficult not to be impressed by the VMP74 and, despite being occasionally frustrating to use, it offers many of the features found in far more expensive devices. The addition of support for BBC's iPlayer will be another major plus and, combined...

Viewsonic VMP74 1080p media player

Bites off rather more than it can chew browser-wise, but don't let that and a few other niggles put you off. This is an impressive little piece of kit.

Excellent at its main job as a UPnP client, great for YouTube in the living room, and a decent RSS viewer, the Viewsonic VMP74 is overall an impressive adjunct to your HD TV or projector. I understand that new firmware is on its way to bring BBC...
